Hydro pump question

Hey all, is it not recomended using a aluminum pulley on a hydralic pump? If you remember my 3310v the I added hydro lift to, It worked well untill the pump ate thru the aluminum pulley. The set screw loosend up at one point, so I'm not sure if that had somthing to do with it or not. I got a larger diamiter pulley but it's aluminum as well. What is your take on it? Thanks Elon

Elon, is the pump shaft keyed or are you driveing it with the setscrew? Other than the fisical load being put on it, that could be overloadeing it. But I don't think this would be the case. Sounds like it just wasn't tight or the setscrew needs to have the serations on the end of it to bite into the shaft. Most cheap setscrew's don't have the serations and are just slick. This lets them become loose from vibration easily.

Hehe, would you belive if I told you I'm not sure? lol I dont remember if the shaft has a keyway or not. I know the pulley I used did not have a keyway, just a set screw. I do know the shaft is threaded, but the pulley I used was tool wide so I couldn't put a nut on it. Being threaded I guess it should be taperd? and of you know were I could get a cast pulley at a fair price? Elon

If it's tappered no matter what pulley you put on it, it won't last. I dought it's tappered or you probably would have seen it. Any idea what pulley came off of it?

no it was a freebe. I was told it's from a fisher plow set up. when the pulley was eaten, it filled the threads up with aluminum. I'm going to try to clean the threads up this weekend. At that point I'll find out if it has a keyway or not. Thanks for the help. Elon

Elon, McMaster-Carr (in the Resources >> Links) has cast-iron pulleys of about every shape and size. I've bought at least threee from them, as I recall. Usually $15 or so...

You might try Grainger Supply www.grainger.com for a cast iron pulley. They have about everything under the sun. Sometimes they get a little snotty about selling to individuals and not businessess tho. MSC is another company similar to grainger with a good website too. I'd prefer cast iron on something like this Ike

Buying thing from Grainger isn't a problem, got an account with my company. I looked thru catalog this evening. Only problem is from what I have seen, I caint get a pulley with a 1/2 bore in a one piece. I am very tempted just to bring them the pump and let them do the looking.lol Just gets tough getting to them. Elon

Your best bet is a local bearing house. The one my company goes through will really work with you. Do you have any pics of your setup? In west hartford is Bay state bearing. Those guys are pretty sharp.

This is how it was at the beginning. Worked well then! lol I'm now thinking of turning the pump around and using the front shaft. Just stinks I have to loose the original muffler. Not enough room. Elon

Do yo have a view of cylinder or valvebody? Thanks.

Looks great. You gave me some good ideas. Where did you get the hydraulic cylinder? Is it a factory one?
