A-C 916 ignition wiring

I just tried to post this, but it seems to have gotten lost. I hope someone here can understand what I'm describing. Previous owner had taken out circuit breaker, and had wired ignition to the light switch (which hadn't been used). He fried the switch when trying to jump start the tractor. I want to wire in a 20 amp fuse, but need to know which wire goes where. A bundle of wires comes from the ignition, and a single red wire comes back up out of that bundle and dead-ends near the ignition. Another dead-end red wire protrudes by itself from the back of the ignition. A dead-end red wire also comes from the solenoid. All these wires are same size, about 12 gauge. I tried several combinations of connections, but never got more than a click from when I turned the key. I think the battery is bad (get only very weak spark when short circuiting across solenoid), and want to have the wiring correct before I replace it. I did get the wiring diagram from the kind gentleman, but I'm an electrical dunce. Thank you.

If the remains of the light switch are still in place. I think you could assume that the two wires go to fuse. However if the switch fried, you may have another problem some place. Or was light switch being used to engage starter? Then it definetely was not heavy enough. The wiring diagram is your only real solution. You will have to identify each component and check where the wire from that one goes to next. Each one will have to be in place correctly in order for it to work.

Do you have 4 dead end wires? Sounds like he also bypassed the ignition switch so you should have four. The one small wires from the big post of the soleniod goes to the fuse holder, the other end of the fuse holder should run to the ameter, the other end of the ameter should run to the igntion switch, from there it should run back to the little terminal of the soleniod. It's probably best if you pull the igntion switch out so you can see the back of it, there should be letters on the back, either on the plastic or on the terminals themselves, B=Battery which would be the one from the ameter, S=Starter which should run to the small terminal of the soleniod. If you can't read them they should be as they appear in the diagram, S is sort of by itself and B is the top left one below that. Hope this helps if not come back and I'll try again.

Thanks very much for the info. He did not bypass the ignition switch itself. The only modification to the wiring occurred when the circuit breaker "fell apart", as previous owner described it. He then connected the existing wires to the light switch somehow, bypassing what was left of the circuit breaker. I will tear into it again this weekend. BTW, does this take a special-size battery? I hope I can use a run-of-the-mill battery, but the battery space looks pretty tight. Thanks again.

A 51R like I currently have in my 716H and 713S should fit right in the 916. Got mine at WallyWorld for about $42. It is a car battery and carries a good warranty.
