Case Tractor

I know that this is not about a Simp/Allis but I was wondering if anyone knows of a good website where I could get information about it. All I know is that it has a 16.5 Onan engine, it is hydrostatic drive with hydro lift. I have recently acquired it with a hyraulic tiller, front blade and mower deck. Any ideas of what it is? From what I can tell it looks like a 71 or so Case 444 does that make it a 446? Thank you for any help it is really appreciated. Will try to get pictures but not sure when. Just one more question are Case tractors very good?

I believe Case was made by Ingersoll. I know the later ones were anyway. Supposedly Ingersoll is discontinuing their garden tractor line this year, which is sad. Seems like all the good manufacturers are going out of business or getting bought out. At least Simplicity and John Deere will hold true to their reputations.

2 weeks ago the college had the Engineering Career Fair and Ingersoll was there and the rep told me this would be the last year for the garden tractor line.

Its probably a 446. I have a 224 and really like it. The tillers are nice and the hydraulics are fast and pretty strong. I'd love to find another big wheel case or ingersoll to go with my 224. To bad ingersoll is not making tractors anymore:( they are very good machines. Briggs should have bought them instead of murray IMHO. Should be a tag below the steering wheel with some info on it as far as year and model is concerned. What color is it? They changed to orange around 75 or 76.

It is creme and red in color. It has a bad pump in the rear end(that's what I was told) Any ideas of the price to repair? The attachments are in real good shape hope to pick it up this weekend. Any idea of what the tractor is worth? Any ideas of the possible size for the attachments? Thanks alot Benjamin Kassulke

I believe they used 2 different pumps on the 200 and 400 (big wheel)series tractors. It might work but it might change your speeds some. Yahoo has an excellent case garden tractor group and they would easily send you on the right path as far as values, attachments, and pump compatability or any other questions that might come up.

There was an artical in Antique Power tractor magazine a few mounths ago on these tractors. It listed the history of these fine tractors. I just can't remember who made them, but like other tractor manufacturers at the time Case marketted someone elses lawn tractor with the Case name until they purchased the company later on. I don't think Ingersoll came into the picture until the 80's. They are a very heavy and well built tractor but lack several of the refinements that make up todays product line so much easier to use. If I run across the artical I'll try to refresh my facts and get back.

I owned a Case 444, (14hp Kohler) here's what I liked: It looks like a bigger tractor with those large-wheels, IMO it is one of the best looking of all the GT's. All garden tractors should have the 2 range, Hydro-transmission, because you can creep-along, or fly with it. What I didn't like: Lousy turning radius. The 48" mower on my 14hp would bogg-down in medium to high, or wet grass. They are known for uneven cut, but mine did not seem to exhibit that problem. They are also known for dangerous free-wheeling down hills, which mine did exhibit. The open engine compartment radiates a lot of heat back at the operator which is OK in the winter, but uncomfortable in the summer. http://www.geocities.com/arjr111/ArtsTractors.html

Picked it up today February 20th and it looks pretty good. It is the 446 model. Best thing is that it has a real three point hitch. The deck is a 48 inch and the tiller is about 42 inches. The modle number on the tag says 446-76 does that mean it is a 446 made in 1976? The serial number is 9728790. Engine is a 2 cylinder 16.5 horse Onan. Muffler is pretty rusted out. It has a radiator and fan in front of the engine. Tires are all pretty good. I believe everything is loose. Will update when I know more about it. Anyone have an operaters or owners manual for one of these? And by the way what is the address for that site on Yahoo for the Case tractors? Benjamin Kassulke

Sounds like a nice package there i'm jealous. 446-76 means a 1976 model. Go to casegardentractors.com they have manuals and other parts. To get to the yahoo group go to yahoo.com go down to groups then do a search for case garden and a list will come up the one with the most members has the most info. Have to become a member to join the group to see everything but it is free and easy to become a member. The radiator is an oil cooler for the hydraulics system. Good luck with your new ride.

I Owned A Case 446 once and it had a 18.5 Onan. I looked up the numbers on the Tractor and there is an ID plate somewhere around the shift lever or floor board, The 18.5 was not the original engine because the guy I got it off of had it replaced but don't know if thats what they were originally. The Hydro on those are really snappy and untill you learn how to control them you will be getting lashed a little bit, and the like to freeflow downhill, You have to put a Flow Limit Valve in 1 if you have hilly ground. But it did mow decent and I liked the tractor, It Is well built. It was a case 446 not ingersol.

The 222 that I bought in '85 was as Art described. It would bog down in medium and tall grass. I was looking through some papers yesterday and found the mower manual for it and it says to mow medium to tall grass high the first time and then mow again at the height you want. I dont remember seeing that when I had it. That may be why I wore out 2 clutches on it. The decks on the Simplicitys and Allis Handle grass of any size. Thats what I like so much about them.

Tillerman I remember mine slipping alot in high or wet grass. But as long as you keep up with mowing it worked great. Mine also had stater problems and would drag and grind loud, I did all I could to make sure the starter was ligned up but with that onan engine you had to take the motor loose and remove the cover to get to it. Benjamin, I really liked the Case that I had enough that I got another one to fix up last spring. I would also like to get a 444 with the big wheels if I could find one cheap enough. I just wouldnt trade a good 917 for one. I could answer any question you might have about hooking up the mower with the help of this manual I have. Happy tractoring and good luck with the CASE.
