Brian, just off the top of my head cound be points, spark plugs, and or carb. adjustments. I don't think it's valves becuase most times with valves the hotter and engine gets that when they cause problems. Does it start easy? If it does then you have good compression. Check the air filterto see if it's cloded with dirt etc. Ken

Well, no smoke is a good sign. If the price is right, get it. Then do a complete tune-up. If still on the fritz, try carb adjustments and check the governor settings. Good Luck in your KT, I like mine...

I had similiar problems with my KT-17 .And the cure was a fully charged battery and an operating chargeing system. The culprit was the connections at the ignition switch.

OK, what are you trying to hide from us. What kind of tractor? I had a dead battery in the tractor with the KT17 II and jump started it. It ran real rough and wasn't able to get full RPM's. After I fully charged the battery, it ran normal. Make sure the battery is charged up. Pull the plugs and check them first, make sure you're getting a good spark. I'd adjust the carb right away assuming that it has an adjustable carb. Kohler used Walbro or Kohler and fixed or adjustable jet carbs. The service manual for the KT17 does not have information for the Walbro adjustable carb. I found the appropriate information in another Kohler service manual. If it still runs rough pull the carb apart and clean out all the passages real good and put it back together and adjust it again. Try this site www.kohlerplus.com and "Enter as a Guest" You'll need to know the exact model number of the engine for the parts manuals. Look under “Service Literature” and under “K Series” then KT17. The KT17 II in my tractor doesn’t have a readable engine tag, but I posted earlier and was given number 24343. Of course if you’re not looking at a Simplicity the number may be different.

Bunky, Remember when stevenj was at your house?Did you see him doing anything suspicious?I think he may have some sort of tracking device on us [:0] He seemed to have known exactly where I bought that Dozer blade and now notice the colors he used when he typed tractor..Do you think he may know all about where we have been and what my latest haul is...At least one of mine is the right brand & color..I came here to post pictures of my latest haul but now I will wait to see if stevenj post a reply to see if he knows what I bought :D:D

Brent, I think Bunky needs some kinda help...I think someone in the past has slipped something in his drink that has been to his house buying Simplicity or AC stuff...He has all different colors in the barn now and I thought I would never see the day that there would be consideration of a green & yellow tractor..

If you can find one, get a fuel pressure guage with a "T" so you can check both static and flow pressure. Also, On most any Kohler engine, ( fuel pump or not ) if you have poor fuel delivery to the carb you will get some wild and strange engine operation. Like needing to be choked one second and flooding unchoked the next. The carb will adjust up and run smooth as silk one minute and the next no setting will do. The best i can figure, the reason is because the check valves in the pump work a bit then half way a bit and not at all a bit. Not saying this is your problem but I had not seen it mentioned and many an ok carb has been replaced over this problem only to have the same trouble.. Good luck

Mowerman I never thought of that.. Maybe Stevenj does have a tracking device on us... Well Brent it is a JD 317 it's seems to be in good shape and for the price I thought it would be a good investment... Everyone I talked to about it says they are a good machine the only problem was the engines... Also I have always been a Simplicty/Allis person But for the money I can't turn down the JD, I can't afford a powermax so I will try a JD... And as far as the Wheel Horse I just wanted to try one of your kind... LOL...
