Bottom of blower arched up on the sides

I've got the 3 belt snowthrower mounted on my 725. For the longest time, the bottom of the blower has not been scrapping up the snow right down to the driveway leaving some snow (almost an inch) left. With the trees around my driveway, sunlight does not get to it so that leaves me to shovel the excess of snow which is becoming annoying. I'm finally going to do something about it. The bottom part of the blower, the center part, is just about on the ground which is where I want it to be. For some reason though, the sides of the bottom of the blower are arched way up with about a 2'' gap. Why is this? Is this just how they are made? What I plan on doing is welding pieces of metal on the sides that are arched up to take up the space. Does this sound like a good idea? Also, are the simplicity belts really worth the $30 that my local dealer is selling them for? The belt that works diagnally on the blower (twists), always has a VERY short lifetime before it finally snaps. I am using the cheap autoparts store brands but before I spend the $30 on the simplicity belt, is it actually THAT good? Thanks, Gary

Most people here will say use the dealer belts they are built heavier than even generic heavy duty belts. The belts are designed to take those twists. My opinion very good money spent on the simplicity belts.

You can get by with off brand belts on many applications. however, On the blower- you need the RIGHT belts. Go with the simplicity. Also for getting the life out of those belts, make sure to have the proper idlers on the setup. As for the cutting edge, You probably have had something shoved up into it and bent the edge down. It most likely happened before you got it or you would have known what happened. lol It takes a pretty good lick to bend that thing that bad. If you have the time, take out the auger and press the edge back out as straight as you can get it. This won't be perfect, but you said you kept it up off the ground anyway. It doesn't need to be perfect, but it needs some serious attention if it's that far off. Also if it's bent that bad it's probably putting some stress on the auger bearings so takeing it apart and checking things out would to me sound like the apropriate course of action.

Along with straightening the edge, some of the guys are putting a rubber edge on their blades and blowers. If you let the metal edge scrape the pavement it will be hard on both. A strip of conveyor belt, or one of those rubber mats you see in a pickup bed works well for this purpose. Here is a link to one of the postings. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=45623 stevenj did a nice job on this one and it should work for you as well.

Thank you for that link and info guys! I never thought about the rubber pieces and believe it or not, I have 2 large heavy duty rubber mats from semi trucks to use. Here are 3 pics of what I'm trying to conquer. As you can see, both the sides are arched up while the center is just about on the ground.
