snow blower belt question

After finally gathering parts put older 42" blower on 7010 and getting it running I thought I was ready for the snow,Wrong,I cant keep the belt from jumping off when engaging or dissengaging or when blower is lifted . When its down and under load it seems ok. How do I adjust the tension of the belt with the front engine mounted pto/hitch set up? snows coming and I need to correct this problem. thanks John[V]

Sounds like you have a belt alignment problem, the belt you're using is too long, or a combination of both. Those are common problems when mixing and matching a snowthrower, hitch, and PTO clutch from different model tractors. I know this from personal experience. Check the alignment first and if necessary correct by changing idler pulley sizes or moving the PTO clutch in or out on the shaft. Then get the proper length belt for your "newly designed" application. The 7010 hitch uses belt stops on both idler pulleys. But if everything is aligned properly, you shouldn't even have to use them (I don't). If Simplicity doesn't offer the belt length you need, go for Kevlar belt designed for outdoor power equipment.

Thanks Dutch, I put all new pulleys on the hitch that are to be correct for the 7010 I even moved the spring up to the top hole to apply more tension still not right,I didn`t take the pulley size on the older blower into consideration. When it`s running the pulley with the spring attached seems to be bouncing side to side more than it should, do you think if I put the old pulley on if it is smaller that will correct it? Thanks for your help John.

Just stand on the side of the engine and "eye-ball" the belt alignment. Change or relocate pulleys as needed. The "bouncing" indicates looseness in belt (too long or not enough spring tension).

Dutch, how do you do the graphics like that. The chart is very informative and in reality, very accurate. I wish I could learn what all these extra buttons do on my computer.lol

I believe its a belt size problem like as you suggest I have #174224 on it. I guess I`ll have to look for the next shorter belt size thank you! John

Normally I use the ArcSoft program, but I just bought a new computer and don't have ArcSoft loaded yet, so this time I used PaintBrush. Just about every computer with Windows comes with PaintBrush. PaintBrush is really easy to use, just play and practice with it.

Just a word of caution. If I remember correctly, the 7010 used a front PTO with a 5" pulley. The 7010 OEM snowthrower used a 7" pulley. The older snowthrowers used a 5" pulley. That means your 7010 will turn the snowthrower faster than the OEM design, but it will have less torque. A 7010 with a 42" snowthrower is marginal at best. Bottom line is you may run out of power. I had an older 42" on a 7012. It would only throw 15' and would stall the engine. I then mounted it on both a 7016 and on an 18hp V-twin and it threw 45' without even bogging down. Same snow... same day.

I don't know if you did this already, but when I put a single belt snow blower on my 7016 I had to make belt keepers to hold the the belt on the motor pulley.

I went through the entire drive on the blower, found that the wash/spacers on the hitch pulleys were to big in diameter.So..after correcting that and using a smaller belt it worked perfectly. Thanks again Dutch, for your advice sometimes I get into a project and can`t see the forest for the trees! For future reference, the belt #1677468 is the one that works when using a snow blower with a smaller pulley. THANKS John

John's problem is solved. But for reference: the 700/7000 series tractor snowblowers are vulnerable for bending the arm holding the spring loaded idler. The pivot hangs down below the blower frame and is easy to catch and bend the arm when sliding the blower around or mounting. Because of the double twist of the belt the pulleys only need to be slightly out of line to create havoc.
