Lift rod spring Q

I have never used a lift rod with a spring on it. What is the purpose of the spring? Say when using a snow plow blade. Thnx Herm

The spring applies down pressure. It prevents the blade from "skipping or chattering." The pressure can be adjusted by moving the rod collars.

One thing you can do is to preload the spring tension. Put the blade on the ground and then go a bit farther so the spring is slightly compressed. Now loosen up the front collar and slide it back to where it is touching the slide that hooks to the blade lift arm abd tughten it. Now if you just lower the blade to where the spring compresses slightly, you will have a preset amount of downpressure on it. Lowering the blade more will not only increase the downpressure, but if you hit a dip the spring will expand to "take up the slack", keeping the blade in contact with the ground.
