I have a Broadmoor bought new in the fall of 97. It has a Hydro Gear Transaxle in it and I'm wondering about replacing it with something else. Anyone know of another hydro that will fit this machine ?

Hi, Yes, There is a Tuff-Torque replacement kit available from Simplicity. This fixes them forever. If your local dealer can't get it for you we can. Al Eden

Al, Not meaning at all to sound ungrateful, You have bent over backwards to help me and many others and if I could buy a new unit, I'd buy from you. But money is something I just don't have. And what I am looking for is maybe a box store machine that uses a transaxle that will fit this Simplicity. Even a used unit (Tuff-torque) from simplicity. So, should anyone out there have one or know of machines that use them so I can watch the trade papers please post. P.S. Al, I still plan to try and repair this one.

Marty, If you want to put a few hours of time in it, I may be able to help you. If your transmission is weak when warm and don't pull the hills, chances are 99% the pump is leaking. This is hard to lap, but it can be done. We don't attempt it on a customer tractor, because the labor at shop rate would buy a new tranny. If you want to tear it apart, yell and I think I may have a video on tearing it apart and reassembling it. If not I will scan some drawings and post some info on doing it. You will them need to lap the pump mating surface on the center section and the face surface of the pump with a flat plate. It is time consuming, but not costly. Al Eden

Al, I also have a hydrostatic transmission (Eaton 850) that is very weak when going forward, reverse is fine but forward is weak. I'm not afraid to tear into it myself if you think it's repairable. Do you have any ideas what it could be or what I should look for?

Hi, Try putting some heavy like 15w50 synthetic oil in it, it might get by for a little while. These units have a ball pump, and there is no fixing them, only replace the rotating group and cam ring. If you ever take an Eaton hydro apart, PUT A LARGE RUBBER BAND AROUND THE ROTATING GROUP BEFORE OR WHEN REMOVING IT!!!!!!! If the 5 balls in the pump come out and get mixed up, you have to replace the assy even if its new. The balls in these units are selectively fit to the bores to 10ths of thousands at the factory and CAN NOT BE INTERCHANGED!!! Good luck, Al Eden
