Pulling Flywheel to Check Points

How do you pull the flywheel on a Briggs 16Hp Opposed Twin L-Head motor. The motor is running a little rough. It almost sounds like a miss. I have 100 lbs of compression in both cylinders, carb rebuild kit, new fuel pump. When I turn the screw in front of the carb either rich or lean, then the motor will not start until I turn it 1 1/2 turns out. By turning the screw lean it makes the motor run better. Is this a point problem?

If it's a 6216 it's got magnatron coil and NO points. My 6216 was my first tractor. 12 tractors ago, but still in the fleet. I had the magnatron start to get flaky and miss, then it would fail to restart when hot. New part from Jacks sloved that problem. Eventually I think she burned an exhaust valve, and I bought another Simp with hydro drive to make mowing easier. Good luck with yours.

Yes, it is a 6216. I kind figure that out today when I removed the flywheel cover. What might prevent this engine from running well? My spark plugs are burning with a chard black color on the tips.

There are 2 mixture screws on the carb if I remember correctly. Front is low speed, and to the drivers left at a 45 degree angle from the front is the high speed mixture. 1 1/2 turn for idle sounds about right, high speed is tuned at full throttle under load. About 1/4 turn closed from where the engine starts to stumble when the screw is turned out (Rich). Sound like your high speed is turned out (Rich) a bit too much.

I only have one screw directly under the fuel pump at the bottom of the carb.

It you have a timing light, Hook it up and shine it in the throat of the carb while the engine is running. Watch the vent tube that sticks out for drops of fuel. If you have them, You will soon notice that there will be a drop and then a miss or 2. Heavy or low float level is most often the trouble and trash keeping the needle and seat from sealing is another.

What a great idea!
