Getting ready to rering my K301.What are the pros and cons of chrome rings. What would you use?

I think Chrome lasts longer & perform better. Usually, you don't have a choice. I'd get chrome......... IMHO JP

I personally would not use chrome rings if I had the choice, especially in a Kohler. These engines are prone to wear cylinders anyway. The chrome rings will last longer, but because of their hardness, they will wear the cylinder more. Sometimes chrome rings do not seat well. My father rebuilt an old Willys Jeep. He put in chrome rings. The engine used oil and was low on power from the start. After two years of use he pulled the engine back apart and removed the chrome rings and replaced them. The engine ran great and used no significant oil after that. Obviously the rings didn't seat properly.

It depends on how the block is prepared. If you rebore it, the chrome rings should seat fine. If you only hone it, the cylinder wear is too irregular for the hard chrome rings to seat all the way around; they will basically just seat on the high spots. We are talking wear that would have to be measured with a dial indicator, out of round, or taper. The cast rings are soft enough to wear to the shape of the bore(within reason). $.02

I had a k301 with a standard bore, and knocked bad. I bought an aftermarket piston, rings and rod. The rings were chrome, and i just threw them in and they seated really well. Then engine runs great now, no smoke or anything. I also replaced the rings in a k241, and they were not chrome, and i did not hone the cylinder, and they also seated good, and no smoke now. I have several extra chrome sets, and wouldn't hesitate to throw them in.

I prefer chrome rings in my B & S Model 19. You do not have to replace chrome rings near as often as the standard cast iron rings. My experience,

On my 10 HP I put in a chrome set about six years ago. Didn't even take off the glaze. Book said don't do it, I didn't and what a pleasant sursprise. I put chrome rings in my twin 18HP, but haven't had a chance to use it. When I did runt it on my test stand it had a real throaty sound to it. I'm sold.

Thanks so much for the information. I hope we can get even more opinions on this. Richard

I agree with BLT. I think for standard replacement rings for a Briggs, all you can get is chrome. I chucked mine in and runs great.
