HubbardRA 19 Posted March 28, 2005 Bud, In my opinion, the battery should not effect the life of the gear. I had one such problem with a B/S Vanguard. I found that a plastic part that was supposed to stop the gear in the correct position, relative to the flywheel gear, had broken and fallen off. The gear would move too far on the shaft and the result was only a partial contact with the flywheel gear. I found this by removing the shroud and watching the gear movement as the starter was engaged. Solved the problem by installing washers to force the gear to stop in the correct position. I used metal washers and completely did away with the plastic stop. Sold this engine to a friend, and as far as I know, it is still in operation with no new starter problems.
