One of those "other" tractors

A new adventure for me. I've worked some on trucks and row crop tractors, but not much on the lawn and garden. Friend of mine gave me one he found in a shed he was cleaning out. Everything is in-tact, and the motor turns over but no spark. Besides having what looks like an "add-on" coil put on, the machine is original. All the tags and labels are on all of it, but it needs a paint job. The machine is a "Garden Mark Squire 12." I have found a little on the squire itself, obviously, this is newer. Can anyone point me in the right direction for info on this machine. I'm really interested in restoring it, although the original paint color (kind of a bronze gold) might be hard to match, and I'd have to change the color) but I'd like to find out more first. I know this is not the discussion board for this tractor, but I hope someone here can point me in the right direction. Scott_S.

Scott, It is likely made by Gilson. I think the largest Simplicity made in this line was the Squirue 10. If so, the serial number should start with GIL xxxxx. There are two Yahoo groups for these tractors, one for Montgomery Ward and one for Gilsons. Both are fairly slow boards, with not a whole lot of posts going on. Good luck with it -- used parts are about your only avenue, since Lawn Boy bought Gilson, then Toro bought Lawn Boy. You won't likely find many new parts for it... They're made heavy-duty, but are a pain to work on because of some of the strange engineering... such as the oil pan being part of the front frame of the tractor...

Check for the pictures of a simplicity/ Allis Chalmers equivalent on the simpletractors site. If it is a simp/ac then the pictures would be similar. I have an orange gardenmark squire same as a simp 700 or 725. JH

Scott, I have one of those only mine is a squire 10.It was built by gilson. I got mine mainly because it had a rebuilt briggs on it but the tractor is complete and works ok. I also have a manual for mine. If you need some parts breakdowns let me know. I have a few extra parts that I got with it. I also have 2 decks and a snowblower for it. They are quite well built machines. Good luck with yours!
