Voltage Reg & Starter Solenoid Locations-7012H

Recommended Posts

Hello All, Sometime in the past there has been a hacker that was loosed on my 7012's wiring harness....dont you just love that :) I would like to put it together as close as it was when it left the factory in 1978. Anyway I have a voltage regulator held by 1 bolt in the dash tower in an odd location... I have saved several pictures of Simplicity and AC tractors that show the VR in the cooling shroud, and some with the starter solenoid there. There are 2 tapped holes in that location but do not match the V/R footprint. I heard somewhere these regulators survive a lot longer with cooling air, but that would mean cutting a hole:( The starter solenoid is located directly under the ignition switch in the dash tower and looks factory. If somebody could take a look at their unaltered 7000 series with a single cylinder Kohler and give me some component locations I would really appreciate it!!

Sounds like the solenoid is where its supposed to be. The regulator should be on the shroud of the engine and there should be a hole in the shroud already for it. Regulator should be a plastic like encased type that has three prongs in one side and be about 3" x 1 3/4" and 3/4" thick or something thereabouts. On the earlier Kohler equppied ones like on my 712H Allis the regulator was an aluminum finned type that mounted on a angled plate off the side of the engine just above the starter.

Some ,like the 7010 had the reg. mounted under the dash behind the bat. The ones I'm refering to had Briggs w/ starter/gen.

The Homelite T13, that I used as part of the build-up of my AC713S, had the voltage regulator under the dash, behind the battery. This was a S-G unit. Nearly all of the bendix starter units with under flywheel alternators have the regulator on the shroud. I have both Kohler and B/S engines with that mounting. I will try to remember to take a picture of the 12 Kohler (from a Cub Cadet) to show the regulator mounting. This is the small plastic regulator, not the large aluminum one.

Thanks for the replies, I went ahead and fitted the regulator in the shroud. I guess mine was one of the earlier models. Hope it lasts longer with cooling air. Thanks, Ike
