A, question on the breaking plow

Recommended Posts

MrSteele
Down here in Alabama, we have decent soil, however, most is a red clay, at least, mine is in the northwest corner. I am wondering just how well the breaking plow works in heavy soils such as ours. I have recently acquired a 1965 Landlord with the rear hitch attached, and, simply because I have the attachment hardware, I thought it would be interesting to have the plow. Any ideas?

I've never had much luck with the plows even in good brown and black dirt but lots of other guys here love them. I think a lot of it has to do with the condition of the plow share, adjustment, traction, and soil moisture conditions. At the least it is a neat looking implement.

I currently use a homebuilt 2 wheel tractor in my garden for breaking, some plowing, digging potatos and the like. It is interesting to play with, and I am even thinking of painting it when I do a little more work on the clutch system. My father built it in the 50's, using a war surplus Briggs ZZ engine, 34 Ford transmission and shortened rear end. we have a plow, cultivator and a point used for laying off rows, with ability to change points with middlebusters and the like. I like playing with it, but, most think it too difficult to use. It is a 'mankiller', but I have been using it since I was about 11, am 49 now, don't think I'm dead? I just thought, that if the Landlord plow was worth anything in a garden, that I'd get one somewhere and use it, simply because.... Thanks

I wouldn't know about your soil, but I use the Mold Plow before I do any tilling. I've had no problems, but I have a moist soil and where I am cleaning up is a flood zone.

Here is the manual for adjusting the brinly plow. It explains how to adjust it for varying soils, but I don't think it mentions clay. Maybe you can figure it out by the information on it. http://www.weekendfreedommachines.org/techinfo/plowsetup.php

The soil here in Western Kentucky is a heavy soil with lots of clay.I do my plowing with a 917 and it really does plow good. I wish I had about 5 acres to plow.
