IronPony 3 Posted June 3, 2005 Well, I thought a fine thread nut would work on the PTO shaft to hold the clutch on. I seem to be wrong?? The nut just wants to cross thread. The threads on the shaft look OK and the nut looks OK. Anyone want to sell a used nut off??? I will pay for both shipping and the lock nut. The tractor is an AC712 about a 1978. Thanks, Gentlemen, for any help. Dan Got the new Jam lock nut (guess the jam lock nut has a different fine thread than a regular lock nut???)and torque it down. All is well!!:D It is running the mower deck without any slippage^. When I tightened it down, I used a pipe wrench to hold the shaft on opposit side of the BGB and it was easy to torque it on. Thanks for all the replys!! Dan
HubbardRA 19 Posted June 3, 2005 I have heard that these nuts should be replaced with a new nut any time they are removed. I have had trouble with the one on my 716H coming loose, since I changed the cone clutch. I was planning to buy a couple new ones from Simplicity.
IronPony 3 Posted June 3, 2005 Rod, It has been my experience that you are right. Once a lock nut is loosened (sp) up it will never be as good as new again. Sooo, I ordered one form Sandy Lake Imp. Only a couple of dollars and they are just great about getting it out in the mail to me. Can't say enough good about Betty and Sandy Lake Imp. Dan PS: Rod, you say you put on a new cone clutch? How much do they cost? I am worried that while mine was loose I may have burnt it out. Think I will take it off and inspect it.
2burning 1 Posted June 3, 2005 My new cone clutch was right around $60. I am pretty sure the threads are a standard size of fine thread - 1/2 inch if I am remembering corectly?
HubbardRA 19 Posted June 8, 2005 Dan, I pulled mine apart because the internal bearing had gone bad. I took the whole assembly from another used tractor. Later I put a new bearing in the original unit and put that hardware back on the other tractor. I have never bought a new cone clutch, but am thinking about making a leather clutch lining for the worst of the two clutches.
RayS 79 Posted June 9, 2005 I bought a new cross shaft when I rebuilt my bevel gear box back in feburary. The cross shaft came with a new nut as well. either the dealer or the large frame repair manual says not to reuse the old nut. The threads on the hydro are 3/4-16 but different on a 7016 6 speed I have around here for parts.
