tmerideth Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 I have just picked up a Simplicity 3310V for my step son to use. I have all AC's and am not too familiar with the Simplicitys. This one needs repainting real bad. Can any of you guys tell me what colors you use for the red/orange and white for the hood? Thanks for any help. I did a search but could not find any topics on this.
Kent Posted June 9, 2005 Posted June 9, 2005 For spray cans, you can try Chevrolet Red/Orange like used on engines, or Chevrolet Grabber Orange -- don't use the Chevrolet Engine Orange since it is TOO ORANGE. Many people just use the Allis-Chalmers Corporate Orange, since it is widely available, though it too, is slightly more orange than the original Simplicity red/orange used on the oldies... For the white, many people use "generic white" though I like the Duplicolor Wimbleton White since it's not as bright a white...
HubbardRA Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 I have to disagree a little with Kent. I used Chevrolet engine orange on my AC713S when I built it. It is slightly more red than the older tractors of that type, but to me it is a nicer color and doesn't look faded. If you are using spray cans to paint a tractor, be sure to buy enough to do it all from the same place at the same time. I painted mine panel by panel. Supplier changed brands on me between purchases. I bought paint from three different places and got three slightly different colors. One of the places sold a color like Kent was saying, that had a much higher red content than the other two. I used it on the mower deck. Figured it wouldn't be as noticeable down there. I use True Value Navajho White in spray cans for the wheels. I have one set that has this color on the outside and the original color on the inside and you can't tell any difference other than the shine.
tmerideth Posted June 10, 2005 Author Posted June 10, 2005 Thanks Kent and Rod. I will try these and see what works best. But am I correct that Simplicity is more red than AC?
Kent Posted June 10, 2005 Posted June 10, 2005 The old FDT Simplicity tractors are a redder orange than either the Allis or the newer Simplicity tractors... I'm not sure exactly when they changed the colors. They all fade over time to look pretty orange, but if you look at "hidden paint" the difference is noticable... That said, you'd probably have to sit two tractors side by side for it to really be that noticeable for most people. I tried Duplicolor's Chevy Engine Orange and it is FAR to orange, in comparison to my original 3112V. I had actually started painting some sheet metal to build an old 2012 for the loader I had, but was not satisfied with the results...
TomMaryland Posted June 12, 2005 Posted June 12, 2005 I color match from under the seat on my '68 2110. Kent is right about the redder colors.. Napa did a pretty good job with the color matching if you want to go the primer/sprayer route, the martin seynour paints with hardener are tough as nails.
