Tom Deutsch 0 Posted June 15, 2005 OK, here's another naive question (I seem to have lots of dumb questions!B):p:I) When I bought my tractor (DA 917H) from a fellow member last year, it came with a Simplicity 36" tiller and a manual for the tiller. The manual shows two grease zerks on opposite sides of that central box where I assume gears and important stuff resides. It says simply to regularly lube at these points. Mine only has one zerk -- the other side has a bolt that looks original (same black paint as the central section). Is that gearbox supposed to be stuffed full of grease? Should I just keep pumping it in there until it comes out...somewhere? Where should I look to see that it is "full"? I think mine was pretty dry when I got it because I've already put most of a tube in there with no sign of anything oozing out. Is it ok that mine has only one zerk? Is this the fastest/best/recommended way to grease this unit? Thanks again for your help and patience. The people on this website are some of the friendliest folks -- not typical of the internet! 2burning 1 Posted June 15, 2005 My 36" tiller has 6 grease zerks. Two up top, one on each left and right side of the input shaft. Then there are two on the passenger side, right above the shield, one on the front shaft and one on the rear shaft. Two more on the output shaft, one each left and right. These are what mine has, maybe different vintage had different numbers of zerks? If the other bolt on the other side looks like a plug that is the same thread size as a grease zerk, then maybe they left one out or someone over time has broken the zerk and put a plug back in? On the middle two shafts, mine only has zerks on the passenger side, on the driver side there looks to be a large bolt heads. I wouldn't put too much grease into the zerks, it will just porbably fall away inside the chain case and get slung around by the chain. I usually put in 2-3 pumps when I grease, or until it starts coming out somewhere. Hope this is somewhat helpful - got to go now.
10HorseMan 0 Posted June 15, 2005 After I rebuilt my 32" tiller I put two tubes in the gearbox alone, "Not including the top fittings" mine has 4? fittings I think.
