Good news, bad news (pics added)

The good news is I thought the motor on my 6116 was locked up. It was kinda. When I took the shrouds off I found the gear on the starter had gotten chewed up and was wedged in the fly wheel. I popped it out and no more locked up engine. Now I just need a starter. Oh ya and an engine rebuild on the Kohler in my 7114H that I bought off Ebay... that was supposed to have hardly smoked and burnt very little oil. I think he said 1/4 pint every 4 mows. He must have one of them 24" lawns;) Looks like I'll be mowing with the 4208 for a while. (assuming it rains sometime). And just think... my wife did'nt believe me when I told her we needed 3 tractors :D

Starter gears for briggs are only $5-10 I bought a broadmoor once that the older fella said motor was locked up and I found the same thing. Changed the starter gear and it Has run great since.

Ya I was hoping that might be the case. Like the fool I can be sometimes though, I took the two screws out because I could'nt figure out how to get the top plastic cap off. Seemed like it was pressed on. Well out fell the springs... (no laughing..) and I can't get them back in. I'm guessing there may be a tool for this. So unless anyone has a trick to share, I'm headed 20 miles or so to the nearest Simplicity shop with my starter in a box.

I GOT IT!!!:D:D With four little peices of wire and the help of my wife's nimble fingers, I (we) got 'er back together! Now how do I change the gear. The drawing in the parts manual shows a screw going into the top of the assembly. Mine has a plastic cap with no screw. It has a dimple/button on top but appears to one piece constuction. I can't get it to screw off and i'm afraid to pull too hard and break it. Can anyone help? P.S. I had to show my wife what to do;)

How old is the starter? The briggs manual i got shows a c-ring retainer or a roll pin if you have a c-ring push down on the top springs and pull clip .If you have roll pin push down on retainer and drive the pin out with a small punch .

I think the motors a '81 or '82. I'm the second owner so the starter might not be factory. I don't see any clips or pins...? Heres some pics

I got the gear today and the instuctions show what I think your describing.

That is an earliier style starter and that cap is just a protective piece and can worked off with two screw drivers. And then there will be a roll pin to tap out of the shaft. It looks like you also need the gear return spring as none is shown on the picture. You can still download a parts sheet and the exploded view of the starter should be shown. After all is put back together the palstic cap can be tapped back on with a socket that just fits the cap.

Thanks Bob. I thought that may be the case. But I broke too many things prying at them when that wasn't the case...:) I'm just learning. I have the exploded view but I didn't notice the springs missing. Thanks again, very much.
