B.Ikard Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Hello All, I'm trying to find a used carburator for my 8hp Briggs horizontal shaft (190400 series)and wondered if the 10 hp carb would interchange? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3981325022&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 The sun has come up and down since I worked with these as a day job but seems like the 8hp's were smaller carbs than the 10&11... Any advice would be appreciated, Ike
gregc Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 I believe the carb in the ebay ad is the type used on the 7 thru 9 hp horizontal crankshaft engines. Here's another one, although not as clean: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50371&item=3982002633&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW
Jovee Posted June 21, 2005 Posted June 21, 2005 Ive interchanged 8,10,11 & 12 carbs on various engines. The rebuild kits are all the same and just depends on the small parts you need to install for each. I play will the adjustments until they purr. No problems for me to this point - Joe
B.Ikard Posted June 21, 2005 Author Posted June 21, 2005 Thanks guys for the replies, I saw the other carb you posted Greg.....I really like the one I spotted better if it will fit and is not physically larger. I sent the guy a question requesting throat ID, as well as model/type/serial of the engine it was removed from. I thought the ALUMINUM 10/11/12hp Briggs Horizontals were larger... Ike

Ike I am with Greg on this one. This is what a 10HP+ Horizontal carb are supposed to look like. Both those carbs would fit a 19 or 23 model engine. I honestly don't know if they would work, but maybe the one in the auction you had posted was mounted on a 10HP engine.
HubbardRA Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 The carbs for the 10 Hp and larger engines have 4 bolts attaching the fuel bowl. The smaller carbs for 7 thru early 10 Hp engines have 3 bolts attaching the fuel bowl. I have the smaller carbs on both a 10 Hp and a 13 Hp that both came from the factory with larger carbs. They run very nice. A carb is a carb, especially when the jets are externally adjustable to match the engine.

My main concern was if there was a different mounting pattern on the carb flange from a 3 bolt 10hp vs 3 bolt 8hp. Also was not sure if it had a different size ID throat. I am guessing this carb was from an aluminum engine but have not gotten a response from the seller. My 8hp is the 190400 series horizontal aluminum engine. Did not know the early cast iron 10's had the 3 bolt carb-
HubbardRA Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I bought one on ebay, think I got it from johnerj. I'm sure John said it was from a 10Hp. Got the carb and manifold. Manifold bolted directly to the 13Hp engine. The one I put on the 10Hp had the holes closer together where the manifold bolted to the engine. I slotted the holes, then went inside with a grinder and opened up the manifold on that end to match the port in the engine. Both work great. Been running the one on the 10Hp for 15 years. Neither leak at all. Never have to turn off the fuel on those.
arnoldir Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Just my 2 cents, so value accordingly. I believe I've read that tat although they will bolt on, the arm on the throttle shaft points the opposite way on the aluminum vs iron block engines. I bought a 725 on ebay and the way it's setup now, all the govenor springs are correct as per the manuals but when you start it it runs away. I posted my dillemma and received responses that it might be the new style carb on there causing the problem. I've since abandoned this project, so I've got no definite answer for you. Good luck.
