WITom 0 Posted June 26, 2005 I have access to a 20 hp Sunstar with a bad engine. Tossing around parting it out. I like the idea of having power steering. If I took the steering parts off this 20 hp and added them to my 1914 Ultima, would there be a noticable decrease in hp available for actual work? Thanks in advance! sandyhillbill 12 Posted June 26, 2005 would probably be faster to put the 14hp into the sunstar and if it did not perform like it should you could always go back to the ultima.
AC808 0 Posted June 26, 2005 NO NO Tom...dont part it out...! Im sure you could sell the entire non-running tractor...that might be a fun acquisition...
JR 1 Posted June 26, 2005 I'd hate to see it parted out too. That's a tractor I'd love to own someday. Next to the PowerMax-style machines, I've always been fascinated with those. They always seemed like a pretty well built tractor. Doubt that I'll ever be able afford one tho.
Ronald Hribar 91 Posted June 27, 2005 I too would be very interested in tractor. I will be in area next week end. Greenwood High School Class reunion.
HubbardRA 19 Posted June 27, 2005 I don't think you will even notice the power steering load on the engine. I put a hydraulic lift on my AC 716H (which currently only has a 10Hp engine) that runs off the charge pump on the hydrostatic tranny. I don't even notice anything when I stall the lift with too much load. That is what the bypass valves are for.
D-17_Dave 12 Posted June 28, 2005 You won't be able to measure the diff in power.
WITom 0 Posted June 28, 2005 Here's the situation - I have too much into the 20 hp to sell it, and not enough jingle in my pocket to buy a new engine for it. Previous owner was a bit rough on it, valve covers had been leaking some oil into the cooling fins which promptly gummed up with gunk. The motor runs without making any weird noises, but refuses to start after it gets warm, and will cut out if worked for very long. Add to that, the electric clutch is growling and throwing sparks the last time I ran it. I picked this up off of ebay - listing said it used a little oil. It doesn't seem to smoke when operating it other than oil burning that's leaking from the valve covers. I really do LOVE the power steering though! :) And that 20 hp engine will work right through anything I throw at it without hesitation for awhile. I hate the thought of parting it out too, just don't know what to with it right now. Methinks I'll just park it until I can afford a new motor. How much would it cost to rebuild assuming it will need to be bored out, new pistons, valves, ect? I could rebuild it myself, but I don't have most of the special tools required for the task. Thanks! UCD 14 Posted June 28, 2005 Cleaning the cooling fins and replaceing the valve cover gaskets might do wonders for the cooling of it and it might just keep running.
KenK 0 Posted June 28, 2005 Theres a good chance that the coils could be getting bad.If it has plenty of power when using it,I would think that the motor is ok.As far as the pto clutch, that's going to cost ya.I'd guess around $300.
