GWGAllisfan Posted July 1, 2005 Posted July 1, 2005 What are the symptome of a briggs flywheel needing re-polarizing? Would it cause an irregular miss if it was converted to electronic with out doing re-polarizing?
johnmonkey Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 I am not sure of the answer. I had a flywheel repolarized for a magnetron (I think it was a magnetron on a ~1974 10hp briggs) I sent the flywheel up to Briggs in Wisconsin and they repolarized it for free. It only cost me the shipping. JH
powerking_one Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 Randy, I assume you are refering to one of the Briggs 9-16 HP cast iron singles with the two leg coil? Briggs started using factory Magnetrons on them after 8/1/1981 with reverse polarity on the magnets so it functions correctly. See the discussion in the archived post. Their flywheel services are listed in the resources>links section. http://www.simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=8770&SearchTerms=magnetron Tom(PK)
RayS Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 The Menomenee Falls location below is where to send your flywheel for re-polarization or re-magnetization service. Turn around is generally the same day. You pay for shipping to them, and they do the service free and cover the return shipping. Include a letter in the box stating what you want done (re-polarize or re-magnatize) and include your normal business letter info. Make sure the box is sturdy and well packaged to prevent damage. It is recommended to insure it for full replacement cost value. You can contact them for any further information at: Briggs & Stratton Corporation P.O. Box 702 Milwaukee, WI 53201 (414) 259-5333 (NOTE: not toll free) Briggs & Stratton Corporation Menomonee Falls Distribution Center W148N9121 Patrita Drive Menomonee Falls, WI 53051 1
TimJr Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 Yes, an iron Briggs that was originally points, but has had a Magnetron coil put on it will do weird things. I have seen it twice. The first tractor was a B110/212 - can't remember anymore, but a friend stuck on a Magnetron. It ran, but wouldn't rev up, and just spit and sputtered. We were pretty baffled, and ended up sticking points back on it, ran fine. I found out about the polarization a few years after that. Earlier this summer I saw a 716 AC that has the Briggs in it (this guy is the second owner, and bought it when it was only a year old). He had a local tech school do some work on it, and they put on a Magnetron in order to get rid of his points. Again, it would run, but did not rev up, and was not very smooth. I shipped out the flywheel, got it back in only a couple of days, installed it, and it ran great - no more points!!!! It is also a good idea to write your info right on the flywheel with a marker. I have also heard that some magneto repair shops can do this too - ask your local antique farm tractor club. Tim
roma3112 Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 GW take a look through this post i think it may help you http://simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?ARCHIVE=true&TOPIC_ID=8679&SearchTerms=flywheel,3112
RayS Posted July 2, 2005 Posted July 2, 2005 If you use this you won`t need the flywheel repolarized. So you won`t have to take the engine out of the tractor to remove the flywheel. I have been using this for a few years and have not had a bit of problems from it. Here is some on eBay http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50371&item=4385434544&rd=1&ssPageName=WD1V . Or do a search for electronic module in the outdoor power section on ebay there are few there.
GWGAllisfan Posted July 3, 2005 Author Posted July 3, 2005 Thanks, I don't exactly know what kind of electronic ignition the guy I had work on my tractor put on it, but judging from the quality of the work he did, I'm sure it was the wrong one..... I guess I need to pull the engine and see what the ignition parts look like. It the points still moved I'd try the battery coil thing, but the points don't move, so I assume some of those parts are missing... It runs now, but really poorly, fouls the plug and seems to have an irregular miss...I've been through the carb and even bought a new carb and no change so ignition is next to check.... By the way it is a ten horse 243431 from around 1976, so it was definately originally a points type.
BillC Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 I converted my 10HP B&S from points to Magnetron last fall. 1) B&S Magnetron igintion module, part #398811, approx. $40. 2) Repolarize flywheel - send or take to: Menomonee Falls Distribution Center W148 N9121 Patrita Drive Menomonee Falls, WI 53051-2272 Dock #23 along with instructions as to what to have done, return address & engine info, model, type, code & serial.
