Chris727 Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 This is my new to me 700. It has a newer (1974), but still cast iron engine in it. Original grill was replaced with a JD grill. I think the throttle control may be original.
Tom_Byrne Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Looks like a nice project. I think the straight shift means it's one of the earliest one's, but I Kirk knows more about that stuff than I do. The sheet metal looks really straight so not too much metalwork to do. Nice score!
ReedS Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Very nice! It is definatly an early model IMO due to the straight shifter and short steering colum. The saturn shift knob is there too. I have 2 of these in residence at the moment and that also appears to be and original style throttle control as well. Bolt together deck too! I can't tell from the pic but it looks to have the ID plate behind the seat (or at least the spot where it was)if you can read the ser # it might give you an idea whether or not it is truly an early production model.
MPH Posted July 3, 2005 Posted July 3, 2005 Neat find. Whoever put the newer engine in did a nice job of that. Is it an 8hp? Throttle control is oem for sure, thinking the bent shift levers were first out on 725's and all 700's had straight ones. The cut-out for the points is newer style if it's factory cutout with a small plate to screw over it. As you can tell from most the pics I post, my 725 is most always involved in any work projects around here, reason being, them little guys are just too much fun to use. Hoping for enough time this winter to get my Wards squire/700 going.
Chris727 Posted July 4, 2005 Author Posted July 4, 2005 MPH, I am always impressed with your 725's abilities. As for this tractor its serial # is 7548. I figure its a 1960 model as the 42 inch deck wasn't offered until 1960. The engine is a 200000 model series (first 2 digits indicate displacement) so its got 20 ci's displacement, I guess the model 19 had 19ci so that would put this engine closer to 8hp. As for the metal Tom is right, its pretty straight, fenders are a little messed up though. Still haven't got it running. I may have to put in a new condenser or convert to a battery ignition if the mag is shot. I was also wondering if anyone knows where the choke cable is supposed to be located on this tractor? Mines long gone. Thanks. Chris
ReedS Posted July 5, 2005 Posted July 5, 2005 Chris, The 700's didn't have a choke control "cable". It was all manual, flip the choke lever on the carb and it was choked! Most everybody added their own choke control afterwards. So sky's the limit on that, you can be creative or leave it alone. ;)
Chris727 Posted July 10, 2005 Author Posted July 10, 2005 Thanks, I have seen choke controls on some of the factory literature for the early Ward squires and some 725s but its on the right side. Not sure where I will locate my choke. I have had this tractor running. It needs to be converted to a 12 volt coil, carburetor leaks badly and its running too rich. I am hoping I will get rid of some sears tractors soon so I can get some garage space for the B110 and this 700.
Nick Posted July 19, 2005 Posted July 19, 2005 Nice find, The grill I don't think is original. Some I have seen had the choke mounted on the right of the tractor, center of the frame.
