Oil seal replacement - BGB

My BGB shafts (both) have very little play anyway I move them but the oil seals need replaced. Can I do this from the outside with out removing the shafts from the box itself by removing the pulleys and coupler and doing it like the axle seal replacement article posted by ReedS back on 6/4/03? Once again thanks in advance.

You can leave the shafts in, just get a something to pull the seals out, and press new ones in. You will probably have to remove the bgb from the tractor or remove at least the right side plate behind the pulley, as you cant get at the 1 seal with the side plate on. I find it easier to replace seals on my tractors with the bgb out of the tractor.

You can remove a side plate and replace the seal without removing the BGB.

I have the pulleys and side plates removed and took the BGB off too as I want to get it cleaned and etc. I already have the seals. These restorations take some time don't they? I can only do so much and have to take a break but I love it.Thanks again to all you guys that have helped me.

At this point with the bgb removed it is my opinion that it would be cheap insurance to diassemble the bgb for a detailed inspection. The most common failure in these units are the 2 input shaft bearings and at about $10 apiece almost worth replacing anyway. It's also a good time to clean out any goop that's built up on the bottom. The bgb is a main component of these tractors being both a frame member and the power divider keeping the bgb in top shape is vital IMO. They aren't cheap to repair or replace once damaged. A few extra minutes here could save you the hours of a second tear down in the future. Just my 2c worth .........

Myself, I always remove the bgb's to install seals. For me, the needle bearing on the input shaft was 10$ CDN, and the ball bearings are $40 each up here.
