I picked up a Cub Cadet 582 a year ago and found out that both the cylinders (aluminum bore) in the twin cylinder horizontal Briggs motor are toast. I'd rather just find a decent running used engine than fork out the bucks for a brand new Honda repower kit. Do any of you guys know where I might be able to find such an engine? Info is at http://www.wheatfarm.com/ih_582/index.html (note* I still much prefer the 716H I own to any Cub products :-)

I think that I would replace that twin with a single cylinder, cast iron engine. I have a 12 Hp Cub engine that could use a rebuild. I also have a 14 Hp Cub Kohler engine block that has been bored .020, and I have the new piston and rings to match. 16Hp is really not necessary. I have been running my 716H for several years with only a 10 Hp B/S engine on it. Also used a 48 inch mower with this setup.

I figure a 12-14HP would be ideal, Especially a kohler:p:). You really notice the power difference when you go to 16HP. My 14 does all i need though. I can do total rebuilds on kohlers for pretty cheap. If you're interested, let me know. I used a 10HP kohler with a48" deckk, and it did fine until it started acting up, now it knocks.

The local Deere dealer wanted to trade me a 1981 IH 782 and 50" deck for my Big Ten and all its attachments. I was tempted, but that 782 had the original Kohler KT-17 Series I Engine in it and that worried me, so I turned them down for that reason. If it had been a Series II Engine or Diesel I would have been all over it.
