callwill Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 My b10 has plenty of power but i have noticed over the 2 yrs of owning it that it uses some oil & smokes a little. I saw some posts that pointed to a plugged crankcase breather as a possible culprit. How to i unplug it; is that it below the starter with the rubber hose stuck in it?
Chris727 Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 Yes on the 9hp models the breather is the little round can behind the starter with a hose coming out of it. I don't know if it comes apart to be cleaned? I think there are still replacements available from briggs.
MrSteele Posted July 10, 2005 Posted July 10, 2005 The breather on the old models is filled with what we used to call 'hog hair'. The material may eventually clog in some situations, and can simply be washed out with a good solvent. Soak it, blow it out with air, and rinse repeatedly until clean, then put the breather back in.
callwill Posted July 11, 2005 Author Posted July 11, 2005 how do i remove it and does it open up or do you just soak it/ run a solvent thru it?
MrSteele Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 You''ll have to remove the starter/generator bracket to get a wrench on it. The hex is at the bottom of the breather near the block. You'll have to run solvent through it several times to clean it inside, then blow it out with air to remove the last of what is left. Do it several times for good measure.
