maxtorman1234 Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Before I took the motor out of the deere, I noticed no air was flowing over the fins to cool it. Well, The head gasket was blown and crap was sticking to the oil, and cooling fins were plugged. In addition to that, There is a screen that was also plugged solid, and allowig no air to be sucked in to cool the motor. THose deere engineers are so smart. Also can't take the points cover off unless you pull the motor. Behind the screen on the flywheel end, there is some sort of cast spring loaded thing. Does anybody know what it is? The springs appear to serve no purpose, as the whole thing is bolted together. ALso, there are a few pictures of the tag with serial #'s on it. you can see green paint splashed onto them also. D-17_Dave Posted July 11, 2005 Posted July 11, 2005 Graham, the 3rd pic shows what I'm takeing you to descibe as the thing with the springs in it. I'm not up on these size Deeres but that looks like a slip clutch of some sorts.
Bunky Posted July 12, 2005 Posted July 12, 2005 I'm not sure why Your point cover won't come off, But on My 140 I didn't have any problems getting the points Cover off, and the Spring thing that your Talking about is A Clutch to disengage the Hydro, Something Simplicity should of thought of.... JMO

It's where you can disconnect it while you're working on it instead of having to fumble with the pedal to get the tension on the spring to release. Also take into consideration the condition it was in when you got a hold of it. Chances are someone has already been in there to make adjustments, etc. I can't tell from your pics the over all condition of the driveline. There are 4 bolts that secure the seat pan to the frame. Makes it much easier to work on the hydro.

It hasnt been used in a long time, since the clutch pedal is out of adjustment. And if the screen is blown out now and then, it should be fine also. I guess i'd better set the points before i get the motor inB)
