Storm7012 Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 I was mowing along and it started smoking at the side of the block, looks like. The smoke is coming from in front of the carb.It lost power and died. Acted like it was locked up, after a short cool down and the plug removed it turned over. Its 12 hp kohler S.N.#9329977. I got it started and it did the same thing again. Is time for a rebuild or what. Need some help . Thanks Stormbroke 7012
maxtorman1234 Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Does it have the right amount of oil, is it overfilled? That happend with a tecumseah before, and it was overfilled, but never had that problem with a kohler.
Storm7012 Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 The oil was check just before I started to mow. Its still just a hair below the full line.
UCD Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Have the air shrouds been removed and the cooling fins cleaned?
Storm7012 Posted July 15, 2005 Author Posted July 15, 2005 Not since I bought it. Could that be the cause?
10HorseMan Posted July 15, 2005 Posted July 15, 2005 Might be a spun rod bearing? Clean the fins good
Storm7012 Posted August 3, 2005 Author Posted August 3, 2005 Well the old 7012 is rockin n rollin again. A had biggie*rat ( Ron) rebuild the engine, and let me say,it's awesome. No joke, were talking over 50% more power and fuel usage is less then half of what it was. I'd have to say, anyone in need of the help of this master should get in touch and let him work his magic on your next major rebuild. I'll be doing more business with him,and keep an eye on his ebay stuff, always a great deal there. Storm
Storm7012 Posted August 3, 2005 Author Posted August 3, 2005 Rod bearing, new rod and punched it .020 over and turned the crank .010. Valve job, piston and rod replaced. Just your normal rebuild. I'm just blowen away by the power it has now. I was looking to put a 42" deck on it thinking the 48" was just too much, not now. And remenber,99% of the liberals make the rest look bad.

If the programs that the liberals keeping dumping endless money into actually produced some results, I wouldn't have a problem with them! To be fair the conservatives really don't walk the walk either, spending money to no end, talking individual liberty but ruling according to the dictates of a handful of christian-right yahoos and all. Both parties take care of their cronies and to he** with the rest of us. I amandoned both major parties a long time ago and signed on with the libertarians. Reagan claimed to be a libertarian. Ha! Liked that quote though. Glad the motor is up and purring again. Nothing like that feeling when you're sitting on it and just know it'll jump to life!
