oil temp

Has anyone any idea what operating oil temperature is in a typical L- head engine of the 10-20 horsepower variety?I would like to installed an oil temp gauge but have to know what range to buy.

I called Briggs and they won't give it. My best guess, that on a 120 degree F day, you shouldn't have more then 250 degree F. This is provded that fins are clean and fan has all of its blade members. Keep in mind that this is an educated guess.

Oil starts breakdown at 275-300 degrees F. Synthetic oils use the higher number. Operating temps should be between 195- 250 F..
