Throttle/Governor Linkage

My Briggs 8hp (191700) has the large one piece flo jet carb and I can't find any diagrams for how to hook up the governor link and spring. The B&S manual is not very much help. The carb has only one throttle rod. The question is, does the solid rod with z-bend on both ends go from the throttle on the carb to the governor arm (and the very fine spring connecting from the throttle on the carb to the lever that the throttle cable is connected to)? Or does the spring connect from the governor arm to the carb and the solid rod from the carb to the lever that the throttle cable is connected to? Is the Chilton or Hayne's manual any better? I just need to see a photo of how this is supposed to look.

That small spring is a dampening and slips over the throttle link and hooks into the same eyes as the throttle link. Sometime they have their own hole.

It hooks as Bob said. The long thin spring is to keep the slack out of the linkage to to prevent the throttle plate from moving from the vibrations of the tractor and causing the engine speed to surge or oscillate.

I've seen that setup in some diagrams but here's the problem. If both the throttle link and the spring go from the carb to the swivel that the throttle cable is hooked to, what connects to the governor arm? Is there anything that connects the governor arm with the throttle lever on the carb?

Looking at the diagram in the Briggs and Stratton Interactive manual on CD, there is nothing connecting the governor to the throttle. One end of the governor spring connects to a small L shaped plate that is connected to the governor link the other end of the governor spring connects to the governor arm which connects to the governor gears. I tried to save the diagram from the CD but it does not let me. I will try to find another way to save the diagram and post it.

Floyd, if you could send the picture to sandtrap21@hotmail.com I will be eternally grateful. Thanks. Would you say that the interactive CD has more content than the manual or is it the same exact thing, just in electronic format?

Joe, I will send you the photo as soon as I figure out how to copy it out of the interactive manual program. I have not seen the print manual but the CD is really good and has some good illustrations. Rod, thanks for the heads up for posting pictures. I will be joining as soon as I get back from the Gulf. I have to go do my last year in the Navy before retirement playing in the sand.

There is only one arm out of the block and this is the governer arm. On the top of the arm there is a hole in which the throttle link goes. Below that and under the bracket there is a bigger spring which is the Governor spring connected to the arm. Are you missing this bigger spring or do you just not see it? Thanks Firefox. I have the large spring connected to the governor arm and the throttle swivel. Today I hooked the link from the governor arm to the throttle lever on the carb. Now I'm stumped about the long thin governor spring. I guess I'm supposed to thread the link into this spring and I guess I connect the ends of this spring to the same holes that the link goes in?

Threaded the link thru the spring and connected it from the governor arm to the throttle plate arm on the carb. It's so much nicer cutting with a functional governor controlling the RPM's for me ;=) Had to bend the swivel tang a bit to get it to idle down for me but she runs great. Now I can finish painting the rims and greasing the zirk fittings. Thought I was going to lose the whole Summer working on this. Thanks to everyone for helping me. Special thanks to Floyd for sending pictures and for Serving our Country in Iraq. Stay safe and come home soon Floyd.
