Boogity Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I was just reading the thread that Roy started about his mower deck spindles and I didn't want to steal his thread. I have a '72 Sovereign with a 48" #740 deck. I have been wanting to make some kind of change to raise the blades for a longer cut length. I have the deck adjusted to it's highest setting and it still cuts too close to the ground to my liking. I have had the spindles out 5 or 6 times over the past 33 years (you know, changing those 6 bearings) and was thinking about mounting the spindles from the top of the deck instead of on the under-side like stock. But I would have to make spacer rings to go between the deck and the spindle flange to make for a good fit. My concern is that the sheaves would be too high to get the belt covers back in place. Are there any short spindles out there? Have any of you tried to do this? Any suggestions? Thanks.
HubbardRA Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 I don't use the belt covers anymore, since I removed them and found that area packed with decaying grass clippings, and several holes rusted through the deck. Without the covers, it is very easy to keep the top of the deck clean and dry, to prevent the rusting.
D-17_Dave Posted August 18, 2005 Posted August 18, 2005 It would be a lot easier to extend the brackets that hold the roller shaft. Then readjust the turn-buckle to level the deck.
orangeone Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 I have done just what D-17 Dave has segested and it worked so well I have done it to all three decks . I can mow to 4-1/4 " and do a good job. I copied the brackets making thr roller shaft hole 1" longer and reajusted the clevis's .Works great. I did this on 2-48" and 1 42"
CarlH Posted August 19, 2005 Posted August 19, 2005 When you convert old style spindles to the new splined style, spindle support ring pn #1677274 is used. There must be at least 3/16" difference in spindle length. I have thought about stacking a couple of rings on each spindle to raise the spindles but haven't had the chance yet.
