AC 620 Rear PTO

Purchased this tractor recently so have no maintenance manuals. The rear PTO clutch appears to be shot as there is power to the clutch but no engagement. Anyone know of a way to check wiring of the clutch or disassemble it to check internally for problems? If not possible I will be looking for new or used rear clutch and the bearing for the clutch (seems a little ratchety when spun). Thanks!

First of al welcome to the club Paul, there are lots of guys with plenty of info on these fine tractors. The rear pto uses the same coil clutch mechanism as the front deck clutch. The coil is probably bad if you have power to the plug. One thing, is the ground wire still connected and in good shape so the circut has a path to ground? The bearings take engine speed all the time on the rear pto so if you go into it it's a good idea to replace it at this time anyway. New coils can be purchased through most any Simplicity dealer but are somewhat pricey as these machines use somewhat outdated clutch parts only used by Simp./AC. Used ones can be found on ebay every so often and there is one on now. The front page of this club has a list of fine sponsers who deal with a lot of new and some used parts. Any of these will be knowledgeable and helpfull with this tractor. Follw the thread at the top of the page and download the repair and owners manuals from simplicity. You have to use the # for the corosponding simplicity tractor whitch would be a 4041. While your in the rear clutch, be sure to check the alignment of the shaft, and the splines in the engine coupling as well as the straightness of the shaft. These are some other common problems. Heres a link to the clutch for sale on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/Simplicity-PowerMax-4040-Tractor-Electric-PTO-Clutch_W0QQitemZ7709687834QQcategoryZ82242QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Thanks for the info. Already pulled the shaft assembly after checking the ground and power through the connector to the clutch. Looked at the splines and they havent been lubed for years apparently but look in good condition (surprised at that)but will check out the trueness of the shaft.
