Guest Posted September 3, 2005 One of the brass piston caps came off inside of my Simplicity 9020 transmission and cracked the aluminum housing. Any ideas what might have caused this and what in the way of cost it will take to repair it? Thanks, Steve
D-17_Dave 12 Posted September 3, 2005 Things like this are bound to happen from time to time. Look up a hydraulic repair shop for these transmisions in any bigger city and you can get it rebiult for around 700-800 bucks. You can find them used at SLI, one of our spounsers, or Joes outdoor power on ebay.

Guest Posted September 12, 2005 Back to what might have caused the breakdown in the first place. How about the tractor being pushed in gear? Thanks for the suggestions on the replacement.
D-17_Dave 12 Posted September 13, 2005 If you push the trana. without placeing the gear selector in neutral then you turn the motor into a pump. Then the oil has nowhere to go and you create possibly tremendous back pressure and could easily break something. The wourst part is after the pressureised oil bleeds off then there is no oil left in the pump and motor to provide for lubrication. If this condition is allowed it could run essentually dry and could easily self destruct. These transmisions are lubricated by the induction of oil from the charge pump. The charge pump is only in opperation if the engine is running. Point is there are several things that can happen to allow damage to these pumps. Dirt, abbuse, bad maintenance, neglagence. The good things are they are rather heavily built for the horrible conditions they opperate in and ussually outlast most resonable exspectations.
