farmergirl Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 After a long summer of hunting for a PTO for my AC 416H I stumbled upon a new PTO from a JD,and with a little machining and an hour of "dremmel-ing" I now have a brand spanking new PTO for my 30 yr old AC. I'm the happiest I've been with my old toy. The sickle bar runs like a champ now. If anyone needs the particulars on how to retrofit theirs, just E-mail me.
ambler Posted September 13, 2005 Posted September 13, 2005 great job Stella. Is the problem the 1 inch crankshaft?
doogie_ac61358 Posted September 14, 2005 Posted September 14, 2005 Would you be so kind as to email me the specs? I would like to see if I can get it to work on a 917. As always, too many projects on hand and just enough time to "waste" on them.
farmergirl Posted September 15, 2005 Author Posted September 15, 2005 The JD PTO was the right size for the diameter of the shaft but since the shaft is longer than the new stuff, I had to have the inside machined out the same diameter the whole length inside. The inside of the JD started out 1" but was smaller towards the front of the PTO. It would only go onto the shaft only about 2" and then stop. Also, the original had a key and the new part had the key built in. The crank- shaft flares out larger into the engine and I had to take the dremmel and grind down the backside of the PTO opening to match the same angle. Finally when I placed the new part on, the pulleys didn't match up straight, vertically. I took the pulley off of the actual sickle and turned it around since one side has a larger spacer than the other. I just lucked out and they aligned perfectly. The new PTO has a 3-bolt pattern and the old has a four bolt pattern. I needed to make an adapter(or?) out of a piece of sheet metal. I took a piece of paper and placed it against the engine and rubbed it with my grease covered hands and eureka! a template. I had to make sure that the wires on the back of the new PTO fit into the crevasses(sp?)/indentations on the block. I'm scared of wiring, so my husband extended the wires. One goes on the electric PTO switch(which I marked beforehand)and the other goes on the block as the ground. I doesn't matter which one goes where.
D-17_Dave Posted September 15, 2005 Posted September 15, 2005 I knew you could do it. It's all about how bad you want to use your tractor.lol
farmergirl Posted September 16, 2005 Author Posted September 16, 2005 Thanks a bunch D-17 Dave. Your comment is oh so true! I wanted that PTO to work sooooo bad, I just kept telling myself,"OK, now this isn't rocket science. People aren't born knowing how to do this stuff." Of course I had something to prove to the hubby. He had teased me because I had broken the darned thing not long after I bought it. ( I still insist it was on it's way out when I got it) That's my story and I'm sticking to it, lol!!!
