Starter Slow Turning Over Engine..................

Recommended Posts

LesH
I have a Tecumseh 16 HP overhead valve side shaft engine that runs fine.......but the starter turns over the engine very slow right now too slow to start the engine. The starter is the style that has the gear turning the flywheel. It is not binding at the mesh of the gears. The solenoid is good. The battery wires are not hot and clean. I do notice the starter getting hot to the touch. There is no load on the engine during startup. The battery is fully charged up (new).Any comments appreciated!!!!!!!

Hi, Can't say on the Tecumseh, but we see this all the time on the OHV single cyl Briggs. With them the problem is the tappets need adjusted. When they get loose, the compression release becomes inoperable and the starters don't have the torque to turn the engine over without compression release. Resetting the tappets fixes it almost every time. Al Eden

Chek the starter.I just replaced 1 with bad bushings that allowed the armature to rub the fields.Acted like a weak battery but the battery tested ok.The key here is you feel the starter getting hot.
