How about trailers?

Some time ago I posted a picture of my Pow'rmax towing a military trailer. It looks cool alright but not very practical as I soon discovered while recently hauling some firewood. So now I would like to look into getting a garden type trailer. I checked out the ones that Sears has but they are very flimsy. One good size rock would probably fall through it. Seems to me that a tailgate is essential and one that could tilt up for dumping would be helpful. Any suggestions?

I suggest a newer trailer designed to pull garden tractors with. Most have a tilt bed for loading tractors. Some have sides, or least stake pockets to make sides. My dad uses just a flat bed one, big enought pull with the a truck to haul the tractor somewhere, then in the yard pull the same trailer with the tractor.

If I were building a trailer, I would want the floor to be about the level of my knees. You can then get things into and out of without climbing into the trailer or having to bend over too far to pick things up out of the trailer. I like removable sides for hauling odd shaped objects. I have also found that a one foot tall side is adequate for most of my uses, and also makes it easy to reach over and pick up items. I have a tandem axle trailer configured as I said above. I have found it to be the most convenient, and easy to load and unload, of any trailer that I have ever used. I also have a trailer made from a truck bed. It always requires that someone climb into it to load or unload almost everything, and the sides are too tall to reach over. I hardly ever use it.

I gave up on the purchased ones and built my own dump trailer out of 10-gage steel. I used large 8 inch wheels with floatation tires and 7/8" axle. The tilt frame is 2 x 3 x 1/8 tube. I have used it for about 10 years and hauled as much as a full yard of rock [about 3000#] with no problems. In todays world materials would cost around $200 the total unit weighs about 275#

I can't remember exactly where I found this picture, but thought it was kind of a neat idea. The wagon (trailer) is built on a lawn tractor frame.

Bees, how big a trailer do you need? I have seen converted wheelbarrows, but they are only good for small uses. You might wind up paying more in parts than it's worth to build one. Harbor Freight Tool & Equipment sells several trailer kits from 189.00 on up. These are designed for highway use, but the smaller ones might be good for yard use too...4 feet wide x 6 long, I think, and I might have seen one that was 4 x 4.

Like this one Morris? http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=47845 I don't know if it tilts but constructing sides for it would be easy. And as Rodney suggests it can also serve as a flat hauler.

I bougt one of the Sear's trailers that's made out of Black Poly and is shaped like a large wheel barrow. Very tuff but the tire could be better. I moved 16 tons of Rip Rap with it and a Johnny Bucket last spring (had to move the rock about 150 yards). Took a real licking and keeps on ticking. As I recall I paid about $130 for it and it was well worth it. Mike

I think Mike is referring to another plastic cart at Sears, which is still available. I don't think it has a removable tailgate though

The one I bought is like a tub, just like a wheel barrow. It does dump though and does work well for all my hurricane clean up and moving rock around. If you put some sealer on the bottom bolts you can even mix cement in it. Mike

I believe one of the older snowmobile trailers can be had pretty reasonably used. They can haul your tractor, or be hauled by it, and are tilt bed. They tow well, are a good height for loading most anything, and many even have the stake pockets built in right in from the factory.

I made a 4 wheel wagon from a old garden tractor frame. I use it all most every day. I think theres a pic in my profile still. Looks a lot like the pic in msiebern post. Had a weenie roast this week and used the wagon to haul the wood (with sides on), then we took a ride in the neiborhood. The wagon carried 6 adults, 1 child (no side boards)

I've used one of these for years. With plywood bottom and sides and a ball mounted to the back of my mower. http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=6970&productId=7262&R=7262

weak point on alot of these garden trailers are the dump releases. and try some angle iron to reinforce the top edges

Several years ago I had my cousin build me two dumping trailers for my garden tractors.^The wheels and axles are from a 1981 ford escort car.The other trailer is smaller and manual dump.;) This trailer has 4x8 tires and 3/4 inch axle.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
