Briggs piston marking

Hi guys. I've been working on the 700 I picked up around 4th of July. I have pulled the engnie to clean it and put new gaskets on it. I found a really strange marking on the top of the piston.

It appears to have a letter "L" stamped in it, looks like a factory stamping. There are no other visible stamps or oversizes on the piston. I asked the local "lawnmower man" but he had no idea what it meant and said he's never seen it before. Anybody know? Thank You! Chris

The letter "L" stamped in the top of the piston denotes pistons used in sleeve bore aluminum alloy engines. These pistons are tin plated. This piston assembly is NOT INTERCHANGEABLE with the piston used in aluminum bore (KOOL BORE) engines. (This according to Briggs Repair Manual)

Thanks Greg. Its a cast iron engine, the 8hp version of a 19D. I guess its been rebuilt with a piston for an aluminum block motor. Thank You. Chris

Hi again. I measured the bore today and it is still 2.99 to 3.00 This is standard bore for that engine. It was manufactured in 1974. It looks like it may need rings but since I don't know for sure what the piston came from, I suppose I'd have to get a new piston too? I looked in my briggs book and I couldn't find a description of the sleeve bore aluminmum alloy engines in anymore depth. I did notice some of the aluminum engines have the same bore. Is a "sleeve bore aluminum alloy engine" an aluminum engine with a cast iron sleeve? Is it possible this piston can still be used in this engine or is there any chance the piston was interchangeable with the cast blocks? Thank You. Chris
