Wishin2BMowin 0 Posted October 24, 2005 At the local transfer station (dump) I usualy do some searching for good stuff and when I went to the dumpsters where they put the metal stuff I was sad to see a Simplicity tractor at the bottom! :>( It was hard to see the exact model but it looked newer than my 3212H. If it was not covered up with so much other stuff I was thinking of trying to get it out but the people that work there have yelled at me for reaching in the dumpsters. Oh well I guess I have too much stuff in the back yard is it is or at least my wife says so... You should see some of the things people just throw away... Maybe next time..... Simplicity314 0 Posted October 24, 2005 Yep...saw a red garden tractor trailer in the metal bin at my transfer station, but left it because of the staff. "Scavengers" used to be fixtures at dumps, checking out cars and trucks as they pulled in. Some town must have gotten sued or the lawyers thought it would be a great idea to protect the towns. Either way, those days are over. And these same people are the ones who shake their heads at the fact that we're such a wasteful, disposable society. I did get lucky once when someone left an IH plow on the pad rather than throwing it in the dumpster. Only had a busted foot and spring--former owner must have wacked it good but everything was straight. New spring and foot and it's as good as new. Can't believe no one else grabbed it. A while back (Was it Nick?) someone said their dump had a 'take-it-or-leave-it' area. That's a great idea. Maybe I'll pitch it to our first Selectman. firefoxz1 4 Posted October 24, 2005 The "front" man at the dump puts the mowers of to the side for me to check out before they go into the trash. I have yet to get a rider but have picked quite a few pushers that I have fixed and sold. I have a bagger that I'm using for leaves right now.
Guest Posted October 24, 2005 Yes, the dump is a good place to get tractors... my buddy has befriended the dumpman and he's aquired quite a few that way. He's got about $250 invested in Simplicity/AC tractors and he's got about 10 of them! Not to set any pricing standards, but he's got the job that brings him to the dump and to people's yards. Most can't compete with him and some probably wouldn't want to try.
goatfarmer 817 Posted October 24, 2005 A sad sight I saw about a year ago was a truck pulling a fully loaded scrap trailer headed north on I94 near Detroit. With 3or 4 old Cub Cadets sticking out of the top.Who knows what was lower....
Morris 0 Posted October 24, 2005 Hehehe, I actually DID go dumpster diving last week. Came to work and saw someone had tossed out push mower at work and gotten a new one, cause the old one wouldn't start. Well, duh, they left it outside in the rain and snow all winter last year, didn't drain the old gas, etc. Pretty sure I'll be able to get it running. I need a good push mower anyway. Charlieson 0 Posted October 26, 2005 I pulled a snow blade out of the scrap bin last year. You would have thought I was committing murder. Dumpster guards started yelling about me not being able to do that. I put the blade on the truck and went home. A couple of weeks later I was emptying the trash in the compactor and the same people were pulling a heavy steel roller out of the scrap bin and putting it on their truck. Guess they were mad at me because they didnt see the plow first. ddh
