HotRod53 0 Posted November 20, 2005 This unit has a Kohler 20 hp C8203, spec #64512, ser #2227912037, 20 hp command, Sunstrand hydro 20, it had PTO, power steering, and hydraulic deck lift. Based on this info, can anyone tell me a model number so that I can get the manual? Thanks!
D-17_Dave 12 Posted November 20, 2005 Lynd, sounds as if you have a Sunstar or equivalent. They were made for several years and went by several names under differing sales outlets. I'm not sure of an actual manufacture's #. As for the continuing to run thing, have you removed the heads and cleaned the carbon out of the cumbustion chamber? This will sometimes cause a small engine to "diesel" after shutting it down.
BLT 717 Posted November 20, 2005 Kohler CH20S http://www.kohlerengines.com/common/resources/tp_2428_b.pdf This should be your manual.
HotRod53 0 Posted November 20, 2005 Bob, this is not a dieseling problem, it is as if the key was not shut off on one cylinder. It will sit there and run on 1 cylinder all day long while it loads up the cylinder that is off. Update: hood says Sunstar hydro 20 but the official sticker is missing. I can see where the sticker was, but it is beyond illegible. This tractor also has a 60" deck. Based on the engine numbers, it was built in 1992 Update 2: found some scribbling on a photocopied manual that said 1691339. Records show a 20 hp, 60" deck....this might be it! UCD 14 Posted November 20, 2005 1691339 is the MFG# for the 60" mower deck which is original equipment for a Sunstar 1987-89 MFG# 1691381 SunStar-20HP (20GTH) 1988-90 MFG# 1691381 SunStar-20HP (20GTH) MFG# 1691710 SunStar-20HP (w/Lift & P.T.O.) 1990-92 MFG# 1691926 20 GTH (SunStar) 1992-94 MFG# 1692133 SunStar-20HP 1995-97 MFG# 1692454 SunStar-20HP MFG# 1692456 SunStar-20HP MFG# 1692135 SunStar-20HP
BLT 717 Posted November 20, 2005 Download the the manual I hyper-linked. It has a diagnosis section of the ignition system and might give you the answer you are looking for. Also the model of the Kohler engine is correct as I have a Sunstar, MY '95 vintagge.
HotRod53 0 Posted November 20, 2005 I did download the hyperlink, I believe that is the correct engine. I read the coil section and we plan to ohm out the coils next. There was no reference to my exact problem, but I got some good info. Here's another tidbit of info....the solenoid that stops the fuel to the carb on shutdown is bad. Originally we couldn't get fuel into the engine because of a bad solenoid, a dealer told us to eliminate the solenoid. Could this be related? I'm guessing not since you need air/fuel/spart to run, if the spark was gone it would quit.
BLT 717 Posted November 20, 2005 I beleive that valve is an anti-dieseling device to insure that no fuel makes it to the pistons after the igition is turned off. Like Dave said, glowing carbon in fire deck area will cause an engine to sputter, knock or what have you after key is turned to off.
MPH 12 Posted November 20, 2005 Try pulling the plug wire on the cyl that keeps running. If that kills it then your not cutting the juice to that plug. If it still keeps running then the carbon build idea would be your best bet to look into.
