sickle bar mower

Hi, attached is a photo of a sickle bar mower I am considering buying as a package with a tractor and tiller. I do not know much about this attachment as I have actually seen very few in person. I noticed in the picture of the tiller I see what I think is the blade for the mower leaning against the wall in the background. My questions are... do any of you guys see any thing else missing in the picture, what should I be looking for when inspecting this attachment and does anyone have a photo of an operational one I could see to check out all the required parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mark

And a photo of the tractor I'm looking at.

The sickle mower looks complete as most don't have the swathboard still on it. The extra set of pulleys on the floor go to some type of front pto setup. They used the same on snow blowers and revitalisers. It most likely went to a snowblower. The tractor and tiller look good too. It's too nice to be in very bad unkept condition. I'd look for some catostrphic breakdown such as bad engine, bad gearbox or something. Unless he wants a bundle it wourth some decent change.

It all looks to be in very good shape. I think I see the lift handle for the sickle behind the deck, on the wall next to the knife section (blades). The tiller looks great.

Tractor and attachments look to in good shape. On the mower you might check the pitman bearing for loosens, though they are easy to replace and didn't cost much. Can't tell if the center PTO is on the tractor or not, you'll need that to run the mower, also inquire about the rear PTO to run the tiller and the long pin to hook it too the hitch. Looks like it was cared for so the parts may all be around but may not have been dug out, forgotten about.

Almost looks like a Powermax mower deck on the otherside of the 3212V tractor. What other goodies is he selling? lol. Tractor looks clean and has a set of wheel weights and headlights. Both popular options. The center pto looks to be there for powering the mower deck and sickle mower. Even the seat looks pretty good for an original. Most that I've gotten were more torn off than still on.

Thanks guys for your input. I'm going out this Saturday to see it in person. Mark

All looks to be in nice shape. Try to get everything that goes with it, especially the rear PTO for the tiller - they are real hard to find, the extra bar and set of blades for the sickle, etc. Good Luck!

It looks to me like about half the knife sections for the sickle bar mower are visible in the pictures. The rest may be there somewhere...or not. Normally implements that are in good working order are not found in pieces all over the shop. If you buy it, it may be another project before you can use it. My two cents worth anyway. Darryl

Maybe I am looking at it wrong, but I don't see any of the knives on the sickle bar mower. The ones leaning against the wall behind the lift handle look like two pieces of a broken sickle bar unit. If this is the case, then you will need to remove all of the knives and re-rivet them on to a new bar. I did this once, 46 rivets to install. Lots of fun.

Looks like all the guards are on the cutter bar and the knife leaning against the wall goes from floor level to the height of the door knob which would be about right.

Good eye Rod. I never noticed that. With an eye like that checking pictures out here I better quit postting things like my paint jobs.
