GWGAllisfan Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Are these known to leak? Is it re-buildable or total replacement? Would I be better off just putting a fuel shut-off in line? Tractor runs and cuts fine, I just noticed a little wetness and gas smell on the side of the block under the pump.
D-17_Dave Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Don't take any chances. If the diaphram leaks fuel into the engine there goes your bearings.
Al Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Hi, Some of the pumps can be kitted. There no kits for the plastic body ones. Al Eden
GWGAllisfan Posted April 12, 2006 Author Posted April 12, 2006 I think this is the plastic one, so I'll have to replace it, if it turns out to be leaking like I think. It didn't seem to do this until I ran it for a while (Hour or so) cutting the grass, then parked it. Although now that I think of it it did "lope" a little when I throttled it down so I could get off to open a gate. I plan to clean around the pump with brake cleaner and watch it to see if it gets wet again. Maybe I'll be lucky and it just be a leaking hose or something cheap like that. Any idea what these pumps cost and any tricks to replacing one? Is there any such thing as a Kohler parts book like the one Briggs has?
2burning Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 I put a kit in a plastic one before I knew you wern't supposed too! I can't remember all the details, but the little one way valves can be pressed carefully into the plastic body. I liked my plastic one and the kits were cheaper, and I wanted to make sure and keep the priming lever.
gregc Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 You can go here to look up parts: http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp Click on "Enter as a Guest". You can also download Owner's Manuals and Service Manuals there.
Roy Posted April 12, 2006 Posted April 12, 2006 gregc, Thanks for the Kohler web site. I now have the Operator's, Maintenance, and Accessories Manuals for my Command 18 in my computer.
GWGAllisfan Posted April 12, 2006 Author Posted April 12, 2006 Thanks for the site help. I wish I could have something more like a book for kohlers. I have downloaded the manuals and service manual, but I just found the parts look-up site really hard to navigate, wish I could down load a complete IPL like Briggs has. Anyway I ordered a fuel pump today, won't be in till next week. There is wetness on the side of the block up to the pump level, and it smells like gas, so I'm hoping that cures it. I also plan to change the oil in case it got diluted by gas. I think it did since the oil level is high and it seems visually thin.
GWGAllisfan Posted April 14, 2006 Author Posted April 14, 2006 The new one came in, but the one in the parts look up from Kohler had a replacement listed that wasn't quite the same as the old one. The new one has no priming lever, and uses push-in fuel connectors. Apparently the 47-559-01-S was superceded by the 47-559-11-S. Any one seen this before? BTW the oil was so thin with fuel dilution, I plan to drain it first before I do anything
Al Posted April 14, 2006 Posted April 14, 2006 Randy, That is normal. This kit replaces a number of individual pumps. Helps both dealers and the factory on the issue of having the correct part in stock and not having to have 10 different part numbers to cover the item. Configure it as you need and drive on. Al Eden
