7790 diesel

I have a chance to get, what the telephone caller tells me, a nicely taken care of 7790 diesel Allis. He says it runs, starts great and has a "like new, acid dipped, rebuilt and new paint" deck. He said it smoked and needed new rings. Don't they all smoke, some what, or is that a bad sign. Since I don't know about diesels, the smoke situation is my question. It has 935 hours. B.R.

Diesels smoke on startup. If they smoke after running long enough to have the engine warm ,i would think the injectors may need to be replaced or cleaning may help.If the motor has alot of hrs on it rings may need to be replaced

At 900 hour it shouldn`t even be broke in. I think I read some where that UCD has over 5000 hours on his.

Ask him the color of the exhaust smoke is after warm up. If his says blue, then that is oil cnsumption, ask him what the oil consumption rate is. If you are using more than a quart in 25 hours which equates to roulghly 875 miles, you are due for rings and valve job minimum. If he says black, dirty air cleaner element or some high air inlet restriction. If it is real gray black, that can be over fueling and injector replacemnts are most likely in order. Ask him to do a cold compresion check. Not knowing the specific engine data, I'm thinking that around 650 psi would indicate rings are fine.

My humble opinion is ...is that you have chance to lose money sitting in front of you. I have bought two in the past and lost money on both. Won't buy another unless its junk price. Only way you can come out on those is if you are a diesel mechanic yourself and dont have to buy any major parts. Like I said, my opinion

Ask the guy that has it if he has ever changed the fuel filter.

I think I'll take Sam's advise, so if anyone is interested in what I have described - I know of one available.
