Morris Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Apart from tinkering with my AC B1 or my '53 Power King 1612, I have long wanted a professional quality walk-behind unit for actual mowing. I only have 1/3 of an acre, anyway, and have and tinker with tractors just for fun. Well, anyway, after selling a car this weekend I was driving back from the notary and saw a yard sale, and this guy had a nice OLD Toro Whirlwind for sale. Not sure of the model but it has the 23 FB Briggs 9 or 10 hp horizontal-shaft motor and super heavy duty transmission and all around, this is a professional-grade mower/bush hog that appears to date from 1955 or so--has the glass sediment-bowl fuel filter. Had no gas in it but took a chance and bought it for $100. Got home, fixed a gas leak, and sprayed a little starter fluid in it and it fired right up. Ran perfectly with no smoke or knocks. Even better, it STAYED running, for half an hour until I shut it off. Question: Is anyone out there familiar with this machine, any special things to watch for and lastly, are belts and blades still available for it? I found a "junked" one on ebay for comparison, mine is MUCH nicer than this, and even still has most of the paint. So, check the eBay listing for pics: http://cgi.ebay.com/Toro-Walk-Behind-Riding-Mower-Brush-Hog-9-HP-Briggs_W0QQitemZ7758965454QQcategoryZ50376QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
D-17_Dave Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 Looks nice. The e-bay add says it's easy to steup for a sulky as it's self propeled. I have a peice of a sulky out here if you interested.
Morris Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 Might very well be interested, Dave. Aren't you in NC? Let me know and I'm sure we could work something out. I can see me taking this thing to my dad's to mow his yard since he has had some heart problems of late. His yard is big and a sulky would be nice. It does have the bar for the hitch pin. Let me know where you are and all that and we can work it out.
Morris Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 Duh...just clicked on your name...forgot you could see profiles that way...yeah, Mocksville isn't too far away, so we could work it out. I'll be in touch.
SmilinSam Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 I junked one just like it last winter. Saved the Model 23 as it has been overhauled with little time on the overhaul. Rest of it went for scrap.
