JohnFornaro Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I've created a stone silt dam in the creek at tha bottom of the hill, and have been digging out the sand and using it as backfill on various stone retaining walls around our house. I have an agri-fab2000 cart, which is supposed to be rated for a ton of material. I always try to park tractor and cart nearly level for safety reasons, and I always....well almost always, put a wheel chock under one drive wheel of the tractor (A Sovereign), since I don't trust the parking brake. Last weekend, I parked on a gentle slope, maybe one foot in ten, with a full load of creek sand, and forgot the wheel chock. I left the area to get a shovel, and when I got back, tractor, cart and all had crept downhill, with dozer blade wedged into a pine tree. I couldn't back out, and unloaded the cart by the wheel barrow until I could. So, the question is this. What other safety precautions does every body else use when parking and towing heavy loads? I'm planning to get a few friends in a couple of weeks and hunt up this 6' x 3' x 18" stone to add to one of my retaining walls. Thanks to all.
2burning Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I have had a Farmall M with a TA and no brakes run away from me down a hill with a loaded haywagon. It was quite scary. I think the problem was the TA allowed the machine to freewheel if you were in the wrong setting! Most of the old M's I drove never had working brakes anyway, but this was the first time I had driven one with a TA. I just had to go for a faster ride than I really wanted to until it headed back uphill again. I haven't had a garden tractor get away from me yet.
SmilinSam Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 I walked out the front door this morning to see the 712H driving itself across the yard with no driver[:0] Kid got off and left it running while dragging his tiller out of the barn. I had to yell at him before he looked behind to see the tractor creeping away.8 Apparently havnt got all the creeps out of the linkage yet8D
