917H ignition problem

I have a 917H I purchased about a year ago. It has low hours and evidently sat idle for a period of time. It refused to start yesterday. It ran ok when I last used it last week. There appears to be no spark. It is the KT17 with points and condenser and coil. I replaced the points. There is power to the points with the ignition on, but no spark to plugs. I suspect the coil or condenser, but wonder if anyone could assist me in verifying this. I also have a charging problem due to burnt wiring, but I think I'll try to get assistance on one thing at a time. Thanks for any help. I have been a member for some time. I don't post much, but do get some very useful information. I have owned Simplicity and/or Allis Chalmers tractors since 1968 when I bought my first, a 10HP Simplicity.

I suggest always changing the condensor with the points. After that the coil.

I would trace the wireing and make sure since you have had problems with the wireing that the wires haven't crossed supplying voltage to the magneto.

I just had a similar incident with my 917H with the KT17 engine. Had some trouble getting it started a couple days ago. Got it started and was mowing along and the engine just died like you shut the key off. I replaced the condenser, filed points and still had no spark. Thought the coil was bad. Today I hooked up and automotive coil to one of the plugs and still had no spark. I pulled the cover back off of the points to see if there was current at the points. The engine started running on one cylinder. Hooked the original coil back up and the engine ran just fine. Put the cover back on the points. No spark! Pulled cover back off and engine started right up. Closer inspection of the wires and found a small nick in the wire going to the coil shorting it out when the point cover was on. Taped up the wire, put the cover back on the points and the engine started right up. Mowed through a tank of gas with no more problems. No spark problem solved.
