Orange Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Hello, over the weekend I picked up a '68 B110. It is in very good overall shape. However, I can not get it to even consider going into 1st or 3rd gear. 2nd and reverse work perfectly. I have WD-40ed the shaft, taken the two setscrews on the top of the tranny out and sprayed into the holes, it still wont go. I read many posts, at least 10, from the forum, but still am not sure what's wrong. Does the "bent screwdriver trick" apply to this situation. I have a parts manual and have looked at it. The tractor sat for about two years in a garage prior to this weekend and was used all year round for grass and snow removal. If you have any advice, I'd appreciate it. Thanks, John
toad270 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 first i would unhook the shifter shaft from the trans and see if you can put it in gear right at the trans if you can it might be something holding the shifter back. if thats the case loosen the four bolts holding the shifter cover and move it forward towards the front of the tractor.
stevenj Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I've got the same problem with a B-210. I haven't had a chance to take the trans apart yet, but I suspect that the 1-3 gear set has a broken shift collar and the shift fork can't move the gear. Of course that is just a guess on my part from looking at the parts breakdown and reading some of the archived posts on this subject. The other thing to look at is if the shift lever is hitting the sides of the shift pattern notches before it can complete the shift at the trans. The hole in the shifter shaft can become elongated and result in excessive shift lever travel. You can drill out the hole to the next larger size and drill out the hole in the fork that attaches to the shift shaft and install a larger bolt to reduce the slop. I think the bent screwdriver trick is for the condition where it gets stuck in two gears at the same time, in which case the tractor will not move as the trans is gear locked.
Orange Posted May 2, 2006 Author Posted May 2, 2006 Well, a screwdriver lost its life in the process, but I think I fixed the problem. I tried the screwdriver after work with absolutely no luck. I ended up using a punch and hammer (I know it was a little risky for damage), but I drove the shift collar in the direction of the brake drum. It slid very reluctantly. I was waiting for something to break. As it slid, the shift lever went into the opposite direction into the 3rd gear slot. Once there it wouldn't budge. I sprayed it down good with WD and oil. Then to get it back I stuck a large screwdriver between the shift rod clevis outside the transmission. I tried to pry it back in the opposite direction, it needed a hammer, but finally went the other way. I had to work it a lot, lube it a lot, but finally sucess. I guess I got very luck . . . so far. Thanks for the advice fellas. I appreciate any and every tip.
tracktor312 Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 Hello just an fyi WD40 is a water displacement not penetrating oil try pb buster or good ole mystery oil they will loosen parts alot easier
samson Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 I had the same problem will trying to bulldoze with the B12 2 and reverse work but that was it finally it stuck in second, and thats all that would work. Long and short the shifting fork broke off. Not an easy fixbut the fork was only a couple of bucks
mark64 Posted May 3, 2006 Posted May 3, 2006 Hey Orange Did you happen to pick up your B110 in the twin cities? If so I was next in line. Glad it went to someone in the club. Price sure was right! Mark
Orange Posted May 3, 2006 Author Posted May 3, 2006 Mark, Yeah, that was the tractor. I couldn't believe the price, the description, and the proximity, and the fact that the ad was posted so recently to the time I discovered it. I haven't ever found a great deal on the forum that was close enough to where I live. I plan on putting some pics and description in the show and tell next week. I don't mean to rub it in, but I'm just excited to finally have the sun shine on my dog's behind for a change. Bruce just posted a picture of a tractor he won on ebay last month in the show and tell forum. I went to bid on that tractor and forgot to check the bid time, I had 45 seconds to bid, and with a dial-up modem . . . no chance. He got it for $100 on only one bid.
