What to stockpile....

I have entered the phase of this dreaded disease whence I have most of the toys and attachments that I want and/or need, (Though I still want an E-Z Rake real bad). The bad part about the first phase is that you spend too much for parts. The good part of this second phase is that you can kind of just sit back and wait for a deal. Bob has been imploring me to do so since our very first conversation, but it just was not possible. Both of my tractors are in very good mechanical shape and are very similar (7016H and a 912H with a 16 horse Briggs in it). Both engines are strong. Both Hydros seem strong. The BGB's are very tight, the carbs are both rebuilt and I put all new belts on eveything. I have two mower decks with all good arbors and spindles. Oh, and I think I have two sets of functional sealed beam lights for the 7016 - I just do not have them installed yet. I think I am set for a while. So my question now is: what should I be watching for to stockpile? What do you watch for? Spare carbs? I think I read that the Hydro's basically last forever. I will always watch for cheap spare engines. I think more arbors and blades will be good to watch for. Cheap BGB's? What else? Tiller and Revitalizer tines? Oh, I will watch for hydrolic lifts. Just curious, but thanks in advance. PS Jay and Lloyd - my in-laws are buying some property in Briggsville. I was up there this weekend to take a look and I swear to God that I was in the middle of Simplicity/Allis Chalmers country. Seriously....everywhere I looked I saw orange! I thought I was developing a brain tumor or something. I think you are both 10-15 miles from Briggsville and the Mason Lake area. You are some lucky dogs to be that close to so many tractors. And I am sorry if I gave away any of your secrets....but it is no wonder you both have so many tractors to play with! Woohoo!

The only things I ever seem to need are belts. DaveM

Carbs, deck rollers, starter-generators, mounted tires-ags,turfs,tri-ribs,etc. for different purposes. Keep extra belts, filters, sparkplugs, points, condensers, coils, in other words, anything that can go bad during operation but is quick and easy to replace. Also try to pick up an extra tranny, especially the axle, diff, and torque tube. Oh, don't forget a good long hose to siphon gas out of the neighbor's cars. LOL:D

"Oh, don't forget a good long hose to siphon gas out of the neighbor's cars." Rod, is that a West Virginia filling station?? :D

I agree with Dave, all I ever seem to need is belts. Since I live in SC, (where everything is closed on Sunday), and seem to need parts on Sunday, I have spare belts for both of my machines. After re-building the BGB on my 7016, I thought I'd get some spare gears, but the bidding on EBay always went too high, in some cases, beyond the retail I paid at my dealer. Since I replaced the Sunstrand pump on it a couple of months later, I plan to get the old Sunstrand re-built professionally, (I looked in the repair manual and it seemed on par with an automatic tranny re-build), and keep it as a spare. Other than that, I plan to re-build a couple of spare (frozen) arbors for the mower deck and keep them on reserve as well. As busy as I seem to be in the mowing season, the less down-time I have the better. Of course, owning Simplicity equipment already stacks the odds in my favor.

Eric, you have some time now and there are some tractor shows close to home that you can go to and browse around to see what is out there. If you have the room, two of everything you mentioned would be nice. But then you have to be practical. The common things like a couple extra spark plugs and belts for starts. Then maybe a carb. Forget tiller tines unless you have some bad bent ones. My A-C tiller is pushing 40 years and I think their still original. Two years ago I sharpened them. Spare engine is good. Extra hydro would be be nice, but not need to be on the top of the list unless it comes by your way, reasonable. A junk mower deck would be good for rollers and arbors. But now that you have all of the working machinery you want , you can compliment the rest. Then again you have to weigh on how much room you have to store the items you want. BOB

Erik I'm with Rod and the guys. I have a 17GTH-L(later version of the 7117/917),a 1968 model 3012V and a couple of B-10's. I have at least two BGB/Transaxle assemblys for each tractor type,spare original turf tire/wheels for each as well as Ag treads for three tractors,spare hydro lift(complete from hoses to control and cylinder) for the 17GTH,spare carbs and ignition parts,extra steering parts and front axle assemblies for each tractor. I guess I stockpile every spare part except sheetmetal. Come to think about it, I have spare hoods,grills and fenders/seat pans for the B's and the 3012v stashed back too. Let's face it! Any part besides the main frame can(and at some point likely will)wear out or break so I grab all the parts tractors I can when the price is right(mostly free to haul off). I figure what I don't need another club member/collector will. Besides, I hate to see usable parts go to the scrapyard or landfill.

I've got to agree with Larry on this. It's likely with any tractor being used hard that with the useage and age potintially serious failers could happen even with above average maintinance. So anything from parts to complete tractors are sometimes needed. Grab everything you can while you can. I can say your on the right track w/ waiting for the deals to come to you. Thats tough to do when you see something you realy want.

I'm about 30-35 miles from Briggsville. I rarely go to that area though. Been about 2 years and that was to pick up a Bolens 1050. A year earlier I picked up a 738 with plow,deck and tiller in that area too. Other than that I've passed through maybe twice. I did notice a pair of D series Allis farm tractors sitting in the same place next to an unused barn each time I went through. Stopped once and the guy won't sell anything.

I have a spare rearend, bevel gearbox, almost enough parts to rebuild a variable speed system, various pulleys, bearings, etc, the rear plates from a 312, set of wheel weights, Rear lift bracket and rod, pulleys, lots of different belts (never know when one might break), coils, points and condensors, plugs, lift rods, cables, and other misc. stuff. Didnt realize how much I had until I started moving everything to the new house. Wife says, what is this or what is that, do you really need this or that, I cant believe you are moving this or that. (got most of it moved already though. ;-}

In my limited experience, haveing a spare part is pretty good insurance against that part failing. The parts that fail always seem to be the ones I don't have on hand.

Since my little herd includes several with Vickers hydrostats I like to keep at least one spare on the shelf. Right now I have two good ones.:D Other than that i like to stock up on anything FDT....:D

I kinda hate to do it, but, I do have a 716H that I will be pulling the motor off of. It's not pretty, but it has extra parts. I also have an extra rear end minus the hydro and an extra hood from a 7016 that I would be willing to part with. The internet here is not very reliable, sometimes it works everyday, sometimes not. But if you would like anything let me know. The wife and I are looking into moving to a place where the garage is (MUCH) smaller and I could use the extra room. Drop me a line and let me know.

Gosh Doug... I am always looking for extra parts...especially if the price is right and if the parts are from the same machine as my workhorse. I will send you a private message with my phone number. Thanks, Erik

Doug, You are supposed to move into a place with a larger garage/barn/workshop; not a smaller one. :D

OK, I think the version of the disease that I have is a mutation. I have been collecting spare parts for my tractors for quite a while. I just got a hood and dashboard a couple weeks ago. That was it. Now I have a complete set of spare everything for a tractor. I just can't do it. I can't let all those good parts just lay there. I feel that I must resurrect a tractor from the spare parts. I can't stop myself. It must be done. This is not just a passing desire. Nope, I already have one tractor that suddenly appeared from my spare parts assortment, my 713S. Looks like this new one that is getting ready to hatch will be a 712S. Back later, I have the urge to "build something". :D:D:D
