There might be some differance in the bore diam. of the main jet. Otherwise they are the same carb. You should be able to adjust the flow down to compensate as the twelve carb. (if it is diff) would have a bigger jet.

Which are you talking? Aluminum engine or cast iron? Horizontal shaft or vertical shaft? Generally regardless of type of engine the 8 hp carbs are different than the 12 hp. On the aluminum Vertical shafts I think the 8 & 10 are interchangable but the eleven and 12 hp use a different carb. On the Cast iron horizontal shafts, the 8 & 9 use the same sort of carb while the 10 - 16 use another.

If the carbs bolt on and hook up right, then they will work. I have a 7 Hp carb on a 10 Hp and a 9 Hp carb on a 13 Hp. If a carb can be hooked up and is jetted correctly, it will work. So to answer your question: "will it work?" - the answer is yes. If you ask the questions "Is it the right one?" - I will have to say "no". The right one is always the one specified from the factory.
