I just got back to finishing out my B12 this week. Found a like new Briggs 12hp that needed a carb, got a new one off Ebay. Fires up good but wont run smooth. I just took it for a second test run tonight and put it throught a good road test. I found the exost was throughing a lot a bule flames. Telling me it might be the wrong carb injerctor/jet. Its runnign way to rich. Ok I ajusted the air, high speed and aidle to its best setings. My question is dose any one know the inject millmeter size for the Briggs 10,12, 14, and 16 hp. I must have the wrong one???? Thank you all in advance.. Your long lost friend - Dan H

Just pulled the main jet out to check it, Its a 30 mm. I looked at a old 16hp Briggs cab I have sitin on the self and it is a 40mm. From what I see it apears to be in the ballpark? Still like to know the MM size of all Brggs carbs.. I might check to see that the chock is runing all open again.

Sounnds too lean to me, instead of too rich... if it was blowing black smoke, that would indicate too rich.

I agree with Kent. Running lean will superheat the exhaust and shoot blue flames not rich.

Been there, done that. Check all the gaskets between the carb and engine. Use carb cleaner, starting fluid, or WD40. Spray gasket while running. I'm betting you will find a vacuum leak somewhere. I'd also spray the carb to check it. Carb size is not super critical. It usually doesn't cause a misfire. If carb is too large, it will cause a hesitation when opened, and will lose power quicker in a hard pull. If carb is too small, it will tend to choke off and not produce full power at wide open throttle, but will produce great power at lower speeds. Both of my work tractors have smaller carbs than came from factory. The 13 Hp B/S that I took to Spring Fling is running a 3-bolt carb from a 9 Hp B/S. It runs fine. My 716H, which currently has a 10 Hp B/S on it, is running the original carb from the factory engine of my 61 Wards. This is a 3-bolt, 7 Hp carb that is now running on a 10 Hp engine. That one runs great and does not even have a fuel shut-off on it. Be sure that you are adjusting the main jet on those carbs at wide-open-throttle. Any other speed, and you are just guessing.

Thanks Rod and Ken you was right. What I had was a new lower bowl and a used uper half. the throble shaft was very worn and sucking air and bouncing all around. changed it out and its fixed. Thanks again...
