gjh Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Pulled my Sg of my 3416 last night, had been acting up, noisy, but i figured it was because it was sitting out side in the rain for a week, although covered. Sprayed some contact cleaner in while it was turning over & seemed better, then a little WD40. Working ok, but now charge light comes on. I think I losened up some old caked oil that ended up on the armateur cause I get some light smoke out of it when I turn the key. I replaced the rear bushing a few years ago & keep the bearing oiled, pretty sure I replaced the brushed 1-2 years ago also, so hopefully just needs a good cleaning. Anyhow, if anyone has a diagram of the assembly it would be appreciated, I will take digitals as back up. Thank goodness finally stopped raining in New England, my town got 12" rain in 3 days, 3 old 1600-1800's Bridges over the Ipswich river are taking a pounding, but seem to be standing up. Kinda like the old tractors; they don't make them like that any more. :)

gjh Posted May 18, 2006 Author Posted May 18, 2006 Pulled off end of SG tonight, just looks like brushes, anyone had luck getting theses at an auto supply store like Napa?
Roy Posted May 18, 2006 Posted May 18, 2006 Per Al Eden the S/G brushes are different from the ones you get from an auto parts store in that they are designed to carry more current (amperage) for the starter function. Automotive brushes will work but the starter will not work as good. So, you need to find a set of brushes that are specifically for a S/G. Al is a club member. Contact him or one or our other sponsors if you local B & S dealer does not have brushes.
BLT Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 Delco-Remy P/N 1946427 or equal. I have two sets here yet for my own use.
UCD Posted May 19, 2006 Posted May 19, 2006 There is a guy on ebay that sells rebuild kits for S/G Brushes and bearings.
