deerhunter Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 1.Can anyone help me located the wiring diagrams for these two machines. I know this drives veteran members crazy, but I just can't find them on here. 2. Has anyone ever changed a briggs magneto system over to a coil system? I realize I'd need to start with a different type key switch, but was just looking for input.
D-17_Dave Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 The wireing diagrams are inthe repair manuals on the tech. pubs site. As for the coil swap, yes several have done it. Do a search on external coils or ignition topics and I'm sure you'll find plenty.
Ford Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 If you click on Simple Tractors at the top of this page, then click on the light bulb at the top of that page, then enter 716H or 7116, you should see your tractor listed, with it's mfg # Then return to this Club's Home Page and enter the mfg # and in PDF format you will be able to print your own copy of the owners manual and the parts manual. We all have Kent Thomas to thank for all his work in developing this great technical resource reference file. Use it !!! And enjoy your Simplicity. Ford
HubbardRA Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 I think the others have explained the publications well enough, so I will not go into that. As far as converting to battery-coil type ignition, it is very easy. Mount your coil and hook a wire from the existing points to the negative side of the coil. Be sure and use a coil with an internal ballast resistor, or hook up an external resistor. This will keep the points from burning prematurely. There are three ways to hook up the wiring. 1. The first way is to change to an ignition switch from an AC with a Kohler engine and follow the wiring diagram for it. It must be from a tractor with the same type of starter and charging system as you currently have. 2. The second way is to hook a wire from the positive side of the coil to the accessory tap on the existing switch. Then install a push button to engage the starter relay. The problem is that with a magneto system the ignition switch cuts off power to everything when the starter is engaged, so there will be no power to the ignition in the start position. The push button will allow the ignition switch to remain in the "on" position supplying power to the coil, and the starter will be energized by the pushbutton. This push button should be wired between the accessory terminal of the ignition switch and the energizing terminal of the starter relay. 3. The third way is to hook things up as I stated in #2 above without the push button, then replace the starter relay with one for a 1960s vintage Ford automobile. These starter solenoids had an extra connection that had power when the starter was energized. A wire from this contact to the positive side of the coil, in addition to the one from the ignition switch (as stated in #2) will provide power to the coil when starting, and the wire from the ignition switch will probide power when in the run position. If you have any questions about the three different methods I have just listed, please feel free to ask, or PM me if you would like.
tec2484 Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Thank's Rod. As many old ford truck I have worked on I hadn't thought of doing it like you said in #3. By doing it this way you should get a hotter spark for starting. The coil will be getting 12 volts rather than 6 volts.
HubbardRA Posted May 17, 2006 Posted May 17, 2006 Geoge, If the coil is internally ballasted, it will still only be 6 V. If an automobile coil is used with an inline external ballast resistor, then you can get 12V when starting because you can bypass the resistor.
deerhunter Posted May 21, 2006 Author Posted May 21, 2006 Thanks to all for the help. Last Friday after work I got a couple hours to fool with it & I found the reason I lost my spark. When I reassembled I hooked up the wire from the harness & the one from the mag straight to ground. I failed to install the little insulator that attaches on the top screw for the points cover. I didn't get to test the tractor (rain) but I still need to solve my stalling under load problem. Again thanks to all
